‘Ye Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai’ (1966) was RK Nayyar’s first film as a producer-director under his own banner, RK Nayyar Films. The cast included Ashok Kumar, Joy Mukherjee, Saira Banu, Motilal, Sayeeda Khan, Hari Shivdasani, Badri Prasad, Mohsin Abdullah, Janakidas, Manmohan etc. The film is a romantic crime drama in which Saira Banu plays a double role.
I have watched the film only in driblets as I did not find the film interesting. The narratives were confusing to me. Also, other than the songs, there is nothing much to talk about the film. The proceeding of the story by and large is slow. In fact, the film with a political subject devotes considerable time to create the narratives of fake romance between the lead pair with four songs. However, some scenes involving Motilal with other actors are good to watch.
The story of the film appears to have been written in the aftermath of the Chinese aggression of 1962. Although no political parties by name have been mentioned, it becomes apparent that Gupta ji (Ashok Kumar) represents the ruling party head (one can make a guess as to which was the party at that time). Jholkar (Motilal) represents the opposing party who believes in bringing change in the system by a bloody revolution (one can guess that it has be to a hardcore leftist party). Jholkar believes that Gupta ji as the ruling party head is likely to continue for a long time due to the popular support. The only way to bring the new system is to eliminate him by bloody revolution.
The lead pair, Sarita, (Saira Banu) and Sanjay (Joy Mukerjee) are camouflaging as lovers. In reality, one is a princess who has come out of her royalty to find a true love for which she has become a model. Sanjay is a committed brain washed revolutionary party worker. There is another look-alike of Sarita (Saira Banu in double role) who is the secretary to Gupta ji. The plan is that Sanjay is to falsely fall in love with Sarita, the princess and substitutes Sarita, the secretary to Gupta ji to enable Sanjay to infiltrate in his residence to assassinate him. He is almost one step to succeed. But the conversations between him and Gupta ji and his realization that he has really fallen in love with Sarita, makes Sanjay preferring his love over revolution. They both run away to save themselves from Jholkar and reach the royal palace of Sarita.
Jholkar sends his secretary, Olga (Sayeeda Khan) to eliminate both Sanjay and Sarita. She goes in the guise of a folk dancer in celebration of the arrival of Princess Sarita. At the end of her dance performance, Olga takes out a knife and tries to kill Princess Sarita but before she could do that Sanjay shoots her dead. Sanjay is arrested. It was a fool proof case against Sanjay for the murder. But the change of heart on the part of Jholkar when his emotions prevails over his ideologies after seeing in Sarita, the reflections of her own daughter who was recently killed in a car accident. His submissions to the court saves Sanjay from the life imprisonment. Sanjay and Sarita unites, this time as true lovers.
The film has seven songs written by Rajinder Krishan which were set to music by Ravi. Six songs including a double version song have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th and the last song, “Dekho Ye Deewaana” rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Saira Banu. Joy Mukherjee is also seen during the picturisation.
The context of the song is that as a part of the plan to enable Sanjay (Joy Mukerjee) to infiltrate Gupta ji’ s (Ashok Kumar) house to assassinate him, he has to pretend as a lover of Sarita (Saira Banu) to whom it should look like a real romance for her. Sanjay can meet her in the house of Gupta ji as his secretary’s fiancé. Sarita has been selected to represent for Miss Universe in Paris. Sanjay gets himself selected to represent Mr. Handsome so that both are together in Paris. As a part of the campaign, Sarita is required to meet the prominent personalities in Paris during which she is expected to give a speech. But she is nervous. So, Sanjay suggests her to take few sips of martini to get confidence. But in the process, Sarita gets high and starts singing during which she belches out her mind about Sanjay, that is, he is trying his best to woo her.
