Today’s song is the last and final song from a Comedy film Teen Bahuraniyan-1968.
The film was made by Gemini Films, Madras. It was directed by S.S.Vasan and S.S.Balan. Music was by Kalyan ji-Anand ji for the songs written by Anand Bakshi. The cast of the film was Prithviraj Kapoor, Rajendranath, Shashikala, Agha, Dhumal, Ramesh deo, Jagdeep, Kanhaiyalal, Sowcar Janaki, Kanchana, Jayanti, Lalita Pawar with many local South Indian actors.
TEEN BAHURANIYAN-1968 was a remake of a Tamil hit film Directed by K. Balchander,BAMA VIJAYAM-1967.It had become so popular that people used to stand in the queues for tickets the whole night and next day. The film was simultaneously made in Telugu also. Later it was made in Kannada and Malayalam, besides in Hindi. In all languages, the film was a Hit.
This film was very hilarious and touched the chords in the hearts of the middle class audience as the subject matter was close to their hearts-how to adjust income with expenditure when fulfilling dreams !
Prithwiraj Kapoor in the role of the head of the family-Deenanath excelled in his role. He has 3 sons-Shanker(Agha),Music Teacher,married to Parvati-Sowcar Janaki,Ram-Ramesh Deo,a clerk in the High court,married to Seeta-Kanchan and Kanhaiyya-Rajendranath,a Medical Rep.,married to Radha-Jayanti. Their family also has Mala, sister of Seeta,who is studying. There are 6 children in the house.
When everything is going on well,the famous film star Sheela Devi-Shashikala,comes to stay as their neighbour and the entire family becomes topsy-turvy !
The film tries to convey a message that one should realise his limitations and not fall prey to false prestige beyond one’s capacity. Afterall,the grass is always greener outside the Window !
Like a typical south family drama,this film was full of plots, subplots and too many characters. Overall it was a very enjoyable film.
There is a funny memory associated with this film, in my early career. I started my career as a Medical Representative of Glaxo Laboratories, U.K. (and rose to become General Manager-Marketing in later years) in 1963. After a few years, I was promoted as an Area Manager leading a team of 10 M.R.s. When this film came to Hyderabad, it became popular among the fraternity of Medical Representatives all over. This was because Rajendranath was shown as a Medical Representative in this film. In one scene, he daydreams and at the end, he kicks his Detailing bag, kept nearby, spilling medicines out of it. There were Brands of Pfizer company- an American company which was our competitor ! We enjoyed this scene very much.
Rajendranath became a popular comedian just in that period. He was one of my favourites. His comedy was different from Johnny Walker or Mehmood, the other popular comedians in that era.
Rajendra Nath Malhotra (8 June 1931 − 13 February 2008) was an actor and comedian in Hindi and Punjabi films.
Rajendra Nath was born on 8 June 1931 in Tikamgarh, which is now in Madhya Pradesh. His family was from the Karimpura locality of Peshawar but settled in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. His father Rai Bahadur Kartar Nath Malhotra was a police officer of high cadre during British Raj whose frequent transfers led to his service tenure across different Indian states. Rajendra Nath studied at Darbar College, Rewa, where Arjun Singh (a Congress politician) and R.P. Agarwal were his classmates.
Rajendra’s elder brother Prem Nath went to Mumbai to become an actor and Rajendra joined him in 1949 upon completing his schooling and on being called upon by Prem Nath who already had started working in films by then. They were good friends of Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. Rajendra and Prem’s sister Krishna married actor-director Raj Kapoor. He had another brother Narendra Nath who also became an actor who usually played some villain’s role in the movies. While Bina Rai became his sister-in-law after her marriage to Prem Nath in 1952, Prem Chopra became his brother-in-law after his marriage to his younger sister Uma in 1969.
Rajendra, who was little interested in studies, quit college and landed in Bombay to work in films like his brother. He did some plays at Prithvi theatre namely Deewar, Pathan, Shakuntala and Ahuti and worked there for ten years during which he befriended Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and even Shankar-Jaikishan duo who all were yet to make their mark in Hindi Cinema.
Apart from acting in plays, Rajendra Nath occasionally did brief roles in films which were insignificant to the extent that no one would notice his screen presence as such. Besides, he used to live a somewhat carefree life, least bothered about his career. It was only when an annoyed Prem Nath ousted him from home that he started thinking of his career deeply. However, Prem Nath did give Rajendra Nath another house to live (which he used to share with Yash Johar who later became a successful film producer) besides giving him significant roles in films Shagufa in 1953 and Golconda Ka Qaidi in 1954 in which he was the side hero.Rajendra Nath got recognition in a small comic role in the film Hum Sab Chor Hain in 1956. This recognition was strengthened with his role in Shararat in 1959 and then the same year Sashadhar Mukherjee offered him a comedian’s role in Dil Deke Dekho, a film directed by Nasir Hussain, starring Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh.
Rajendra Nath along with Asha Parekh were a regular feature in many Nasir Hussain films like Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon, Jab Pyar KisiSe Hota Hai, Baharon Ke Sapne and Pyar Ka Mausam. He was one of the most famous comedians. His best roles as a comedian were in Mere Sanam and Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon. He also played the role of Hero/Second Lead in Vachan and Teen Bahuraniyan. He played supporting roles in films like Dharkan by Devendra Goel and Jeevan Mrityu by Rajshri Productions.
His career was badly affected following a car accident in 1969 as a result of which, he had to spend many months in hospital. Then in 1974, he started shooting for his home production The Gate Crasher starring Randhir Kapoor and Neetu Singh in main leads. However, his lack of experience in filmmaking led to him being betrayed by his associates and after falling into a huge debt owing to this, he had to stall the film after ten days of shoot. With heavy debt, the creditors started pestering him. He had to accept whatever role he got as a comedian without bothering about the script of the films to repay his loans. This is the reason that in his latter films especially in the 1980s, he worked in a record 80+ films which were mostly listless as far as his roles were concerned. But with these roles, he repaid his outstanding debt.
He starred in a number of Punjabi films such as Jatt Punjabi and Do Posti. His last film was Laash.
As per the data provided by film historian Late Harish Raghuvanshi, Rajendra Nath acted in 9 films of 1950s, 70 in 1960s, 67 in 1970s, 84 in 1980s and 23 in 1990s, thus in total 253 films in his entire acting career. Most of the information above was shared by Rajendra Nath himself to film historian Shishir Krishna Sharma of his column Kya Bhooloon Kya Yaad Karoon in the Hindi weekly paper Sahara Samay during the 2000s. He died on 13 February 2008 from cardiac arrest at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, a son who used to work for Qatar Airlines and a daughter.
