Hullo Atuldom

Wishing everyone a very HAPPY & Prosperous Dhanteras 🪔, Deepawali 🪔🪔, Bali Pratipada 🪔🪔🪔, Bhai Dooj Or Bhau Beej (as it is called in western India). Additionally India celebrates Lakshmi Pooja too, in some parts. The festivities also have Naraka Chaturdashi, and Kali Chaudas or Hanuman Puja, depending on the region one belongs to. The next few days are definitely a period of greeting, eating and gifting friends, relatives and families. Till a few years/ decades back, crackers used to be part of the celebrations; but with knowledge about environmental & noise pollution gaining foothold in the community people have either switched to environment friendly crackers or given them a miss altogether. Plus, there is the start of the New Year in some parts of the country.

“Door Nahin Manzil” (1973) was a film that had Pradeep Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Manmohan Krishna, Faryal, Durga Khote, Hina Kausar, Suresh, Ram Avtar, Master Ratan, Maruti Rao etc, with Reshma playing the lady, cast romantically opposite Sanjeev Kumar. The film was produced and directed by Hari Walia. It had music by Shankar Jaikishan & Roshan (the title song). Anjaan (Lalji Pandey) and Indeevar (Shyamalal Babu Rai) had written the five songs of the film of which the following four are present in the blog:-

SongDate of postRemarks
Ajeeb zindagee hai ye1 September 2013(post has lengthy discussion on the identity of the actress Reshma)
Bezubaan dil shor na machaa4 March 2016(post by Sudhirji. Multi-version song)
Liye chal gadiyaa o mere mitwaa20 January 2024(post by Sadanandji, giving story of the film)

With today’s song the film reaches YYIIPPEEEEhood!!.

I landed on this song when I asked Google “is there any Sanjeev Kumar film with music by Shankar Jaikishan?”.

I got ‘Chanda Aur Bilji’, ‘Rivaaj’, ‘Shikar’, ‘Sachaai’, ‘Umang’ and ‘Door Nahin Manzil’ in the answer. Status of these films on the blog is :

Movie (Year)Status on the blog
Shikaar (1968)YYIIPPEEEED
Chanda Aur Bijli (1969)YYIIPPEEEED
Sachaai (1969)YYIIPPEEEED
Umang (1970)YYIIPPEEEED
Rivaaj (1972)5 songs covered out of 8
Door Nahin Manzil (1973)4 songs covered out of 5

No prizes for guessing why I looked up for songs from movies that have Sanjeev Kumar in the cast with music by Shankar Jaikishan.

I was looking to remember two artists who graced the Indian film industry in the era when we had great music (according to the generation that says those were the days” 🙂 )

Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal (4 November 1929 – 12 September 1971) was born to Dahyabhai Panchal and his wife. As a child he lived in Bansda (Vansada), a town in the present-day state of Gujarat. Jaikishan was adept at playing the harmonium. It was outside the office of Chandravadan Bhatt Shankar and Jaikishan met a number of times. They struck a conversation and discovered each other. The two developed a close friendship to the extent that the people started referring to them ‘Ram-Lakshman’ and by several similar-meaning nicknames. While working in Prithvi Theatre, Shankar and Jaikishan used to compose tunes and were in touch with Raj Kapoor i.e. the duo met Raj Kapoor at Prithvi Theatre. The duo got their break in films through Raj Kapoor’s ‘Barsaat’ in 1949. The Shankar Jaikishan duo gave music from 1949 to 1971 (when Jaikishan passed away) without the audience ever knowing which song was who’s brain-child. After 1971, Shankar continued to compose music as Shankar-Jaikishan till he himself passed away in 1987.

Shankar-Jaikishan’s compositions broke new ground in Hindi film music. Apart from relying upon their knowledge of Indian classical music, they also employed western beats and orchestration. They were the pioneers in establishing the role of the orchestra in song compositions as a medium to express & enhance the meanings & feelings of songs rather than using it just as a `filler’ as per the prevalent practice before their advent on the scene. The songs they composed were structured into prelude, mukhda, interludes, antara and epilogues. They also used western-classical based Waltz rhythm in a number of their songs just as using semi-classical tunes for their songs.

The song in this post is not a great specimen for Shankar-Jaikishan songs but is a sample of how western tunes & instruments were used to create a Hindi film song. It is in the voice of Sharda (Sharda Rajan Iyengar). On screen we can see Sanjeev Kumar enjoying the dance number, in the company of a lady who (I guess) is Reshma. I am unable to recognise the dancer- there are three names in the list of actors of the film- Julie, Rupali & Sadhna Khote one of who could be the dancer. (I am sure Prakashchandraji will help in identification)

The film has Sanjeev Kumar playing his age, i.e. looking young and handsome with his trademark smile. 6st November is his 41st death anniversary. He was only 47 at the time of his death. He was a bachelor; his death left a few of his female co-actors heartbroken.

Remembering JaiKishan and Sanjeev Kumar with this song.

Editor’s note:-The movie has six songs. Mahendra Kapoor’s solo song “aisi lagi jaise koi meethhee agan” is yet to be covered in the blog.
