Today’s song is from the film Samaaj-1954.
The film was produced by Ashok Kumar, under his own banner Ashok Kumar productions, Bombay. As expected in those days, the film’s director was Vasant Joglekar and the Music Director was Arun Kumar Mukherjee. He was Ashok Kumar’s cousin (their mothers were sisters). The cast was Ashok Kumar, Usha Kiran, Shashikala, Anup Kumar, Agha, Nazir hussain, leela Mishra, Iftikhar, Sumati Gupte, Aroop Kumar (son of Ashok Kumar) and others. There were 2 Guest artistes – S.N.Banerjee and Dhumal. The film’s songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Buddhadeb Dasgupta (11/02/1944 – 10/06/2021) has been a well-known director of many off-beat and ‘middle of the road’ Bangla films, some of which have earned him the National Film Awards and other awards. I was not aware that he had also directed 3 Hindi films, ‘Andhi Gali’ (1984), ‘Bagh Bahadur’ (1990) and ‘Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa’ (2014) until recently when I heard a song from his third Hindi film. The reason for this film’s obscurity was that it never got theatrical release though the film was certified by the Censor Board on September 8, 2014, for its India release. However, before that it was premiered on October 17, 2013, at BFI, London Film Festival. In October 2020, EROS NOW released the film on OTT platform. The cast consisted of Navazuddin Siddiqui in the main role with Makrand Brahme, Niharika Singh, Ananya Chatterjee, Pankaj Tripathi, Ekavali Khanna, Amrita Chattopadhyay, Masood Akhtar etc.

Today’s song is from an extremely obscure film Chhoti Duniya-1953.
The reason this film is so obscure is that the film was made by an unknown banner – Meera Productions, Ahmedabad. The producer’s name- D.M.Sheth- was as unknown as this film’s director- cum – Hero, Uday Kumar. The entire list of the starcast was almost full of less known or unknown artistes like Uday Kumar, Leela Kumari, Nannoo, Ranjit kumari, Ashwini Roy, B.Lalwani, Mulji Khushal, Babu, Chander, Asha etc. Since it was a film produced in Gujarat, it is possible that some of the artistes may be from Gujarathi films or stage dramas. Today’s song is from the film Sipahiya-1949.
When India got independence in 1947 and the British Rule ended, the Indian public breathed a sigh of relief. Especially, the film industry felt like coming out of a prison. During British rule, there were so many restrictions, specially during the war period, on the filmmaking – like, you can’t show the British in bad light, you can’t speak about Independence openly, you can’t criticise Government policies etc etc. Even the wordings of songs and dialogues were under a sharp lens. The best example of this oppression was the song in the film ” Kismet”-1943, ‘Aaj Himalay ki choti se ‘ written by Kavi Pradeep. He had to go underground to avoid arrest for this song !
