Today’s song is from the film Shahnaaz-1948.
This film was directed by a Comedian- Shaikh and the music was by Singer/Actress Amirbai Karnataki. The cast of the film was Begum Para, Altaf, Nihal, Shanta Patel, Gulnar, Shama Dulari, Basheer , Shaikh and others. Most of the cast, except Begum Para and Altaf, was from C grade action films.
One of the interesting riddles the new “Old Film” lovers chew with interest is, who was the first woman Music Director in Hindi films. Time and again it has been proven, told, written and accepted that Bibbo aka Isharat Sultana was the First woman M.D., but still it is raised every now and then and the debate continues unabated.

“Harishchandra Taramati-1963” was directed by B.K. Adarsh for ‘Adarshlok, Bombay’. It was a movie of mythological genre. It had Prithviraj Kapoor, Jaimala, B.M. Vyas, Tiwari, P. Kailash, Naazi, Helen, Ulhas, Babu Raje, Nasreen, Saraswati, child artiste Babloo and others. Story of this movie was written by Pandit Madhur and Vishwanath Pandey and screenplay was written by Naval Mathur. Dialogue writing was by Adarsh himself. The editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu. Geet Kosh mentions eight songs for this movie (including one three part song). As mentioned above Kavi Pradeep wrote all songs for this movie. Music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. “Harishchandra Taramati-1963” is the only movie where lyricist Kavi Pradeep and composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal came together and collaborated musically.

The title of this movie is ‘Samasya’. It was passed by the censor board on 29.11.1975. Geet Kosh V (1971-1980) mentions this movie as belonging to the genre of ‘social movies’. It was directed by Dayabhai Bhakt for ‘Akik Chitra, Bombay’. The cast of this movie had Madhuchhanda, Pawan Dutt, Chitra Sundaram, Atam Prakash, Sunil Dhawan, D.S. Mehta, Rakesh Jaimani, Vikas Bali, Pratibha Matkari, Anjali Devi and others. Sajjan, Jagirdar, Pallavi Mehta and Damodar Shah had made special appearances in this movie.

The film was a remake of a Marathi film, “Suwasini”-1953. It was produced by Datta Dharmadhikari for his own banner Alhad Chitra, Poona. (Alhad was his son’s name). The film was a Hit in Marathi, so a Hindi remake was made. It was directed by Marathi’s famous and successful director Anant Mane. Of course, when he directed this film, he was an assistant to Datta Dharmadhikari, but very soon he became a big name in Marathi.
