Dheere dheere dhal ri chandaa

“Angulimaal” (1960) is the story of a Historical/mythological character Angulimaal who was a bandit during Gautam Buddha’s time. He would rob people and cut their fingers (anguli) and wear a garland (mala) made out of these fingers- hence his name Angulimaal. According to tales, he gets hold of Lord Buddha and he intends to subject him to the same treatment, but he gets reformed by Lord Buddha.

“Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan” (1959) is a Mythological/historical movie which had actors like Jairaj, Anita Guha, Ulhas, Sapru, B M Vyas, Chand Usmani, Sundar etc in it. Topicwise/ budgetwise, it was a B grade movie. So naturally it follows that the music of this movie must be A grade. 🙂

“Devtaa” (1956) is a movie that was one of the earlier Hindi movies produced by a South Indian Production house. The lead actors of this movie were South Indians too. Gemini Ganeshan, Anjali Devi and Vyjyanti Mala had played the lead roles in this movie.

Using the word “Chaand” in the lyrics, if done carefully, has the effect of making the song a nice romantic song. and if the title of the movie itself is “Chaand”, and the song is picturised on a “chaandni raat” (full moon light), then the effect is incredible and it leads to the kind of songs that I describe as a “Chaayaageet” songs.
