Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Raat chup hai chaandni madhosh hai

Posted on: April 2, 2011

This article is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor of articles to this blog.

Recently, I had written about the song “haseenon se to bas saaheb” from the movie “Ustaadon Ke Ustaad” (1963).

This is a movie that till about a year ago, I’d only heard one song from – that was the Rafi classic “sau baar janam lenge”.

Then I heard “haseenon se” about a year ago and I fell totally in love with it (love at first hear).

Today, I’ve just heard another song from the film for the very first time in my life and I am blown away by it.

It is “raat chup hai” by Asha Bhosle.

As a prelude to this song, there are a couple of lines sung by a male singer (sorry, I am not able to identify him) for a boatman, exhorting him to take on the storms with courage. This is then followed by Asha Bhosle’s song.
[Atul’s comment-The male singer is Ravi, the music director of this song.]

I have not seen the film so I cannot give too much of a context for the song but, from the video, it looks like Pradeep Kumar is troubled about something and Shakeela is trying to boost his spirits.

For me, it is always a pleasure to watch Shakeela in a film. She has an elegant beauty about her which Is difficult to describe.

I find the song itself absolutely magical. I’ve always been a huge fan of Asha Bhosle and this song just confirms to me what I already know – that she’s sung loads and loads of not very well-known songs throughout her career that certainly deserve to be better known. I may be wrong but I don’t think this is one of her better-known songs and it SO deserves to be.

Once again, we have lyrics by Asad Bhopali and soft music, very pleasant to the ears, by Ravi. Asha has sung many beautiful songs for Ravi over the years – this one can be added to that long list.

I heard this song for the first time today – this also confirms to me that there are plenty of gems out there that I am still blissfully unaware of. And maybe that’s not such a bad thing. It keeps my journey into the realm of old Hindi songs ever exciting.

Sometimes I feel like a pearl diver, going deep down to the ocean floor looking for pearl oysters. 🙂
So much fun when you do find an oyster with a pearl.

Song-Raat chup hai chaandni madhosh hai(Ustaadon Ke Ustaad) (1963) Singer-Ravi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Asad Bhopali, MD-Ravi

Toofaanon se takraaye jaa
Lag jaayegi naav kinaare
Is jag mein hai jeet usi ki
Dukh mein jo himmat na haare

Raat chup hai chaandni madhosh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khaamosh hai
Raat chup hai chandni madhosh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khaamosh hai

Aa aa aa aa
O o o o o
Tum hamesha muskuraate hi rahey ho
Zindagi ke naaz uthaate hi rahey ho
ho ho
Aaj wo jalwa kahaan rooposh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khamosh hai
Raat chup hai chaandni madhosh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khaamosh hai
aa aa aa

aa aa aaa
Aaj dil par chhed do koi taraana
Jis ko sun kar jhoom uthey saara zamaana
O o
Hum bhi dekhen kisko kitna hosh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khaamosh hai
Raat chup hai chaandni madhosh hai
Muskura bhi do fizaa khaamosh hai
