I was looking for a song of Dev Anand for this Rafi series. Much as I wanted a composition by S. D. Burman to feature here as a typical Dev Anand song, I could not find one which was yet to be posted. What I found instead was this song from the movie “Dushman” (1957). This is a Rafi solo starting with the alphabet ‘N”. On screen Dev Anand is singing this on the streets, with kids in the area following him around. He is in disguise dressed up as a ‘magician’, singing repeatedly ‘main jaadugar Bangal kaa” so as to emphasise his profession.

It is time for the alphabet ‘M’ in the A-Z of Rafi songs series. I have taken my time in deciding which type songs are a must in the series and accordingly have almost finalised the songs in this list. Initially, when planning this series I just made a random selection of songs for ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ to start it on time with Rafi sahab 33rd death anniversary.

The song beginning with ‘K’ is from the film ‘jauhri’ (1951). This Rafi sahab Solo is adding a dimension to this series. Two songs from the film Ae muhabbat tere jahaan mein gham ke siwa kuchh bhi nahin and Aa mile kal bichhad gaye are already posted. Both were solos by Geeta Dutt, picturized on Geeta Bali. This Rafi solo is performed on screen by ‘Amarnath’ (As per the excel sheet). Tajnath Zaar is the lyricist and music is by Pandit Harbanslal.

We reach the alphabet ‘J’ in the series. I had actually finalised a duet song for this alphabet. The lyrics were all ready, but than I just thought to check what are the options for the rest of the alphabets. I made a list of appealing and interesting songs for them. But it occurred to me that none of those songs I had shortlisted were Shammi Kapoor songs. Now this would be unthinkable, no song of Shammi Kapoor vintage in the series will render it incomplete.

Recently I have requested Sudhir Sir to find a rare Rafi song for me. It is a song which actually brought me to to this blog. It is a non-film song which nobody seems to know anything about. Three years ago I was desperately searching for the full lyrics of this prayer poem ‘Khud jiyo auron ko bhi jeene do’. I searched extensively on the net but could not find the full lyrics. I had no inkling at that time that Rafi sahab had sung this song. But some site (I do not remember which one) had this information that this prayer/poem was by Rafi sahab and it was picturized in a film by Films Division of India, where none other than Prithvi Raj Kapoor is singing it in front of a classroom. There after I searched for it high and dry,but the result was always zilch. Now I have no way of verifying if the information about the song is strictly correct or not. But it was a start and unfortunately also the end of it. All this time this thing has always been in the back of my mind, which comes to fore from time to time. Like it did the other day when I made that request to Sudhir Sir.

So we reach the alphabet ‘H’ in this series of A to Z of Rafi songs. There are around 350 songs beginning with ‘H’ in the excel sheets listing Rafi sahab’s songs. At a guess, some 125 songs beginning with this alphabet are already posted in the blog. Among the remaining songs, I have zoomed in on this qawwali from ‘Ham kisi se kam nahin’. As far as this series is concerned, this will be the second song from this movie from 1977. Now, I have many reasons for choosing again a song from this film after ‘chaand mera dil chandni ho tum ‘.

It is the general belief that there is a hindi film song for every situation. There are also a host of fans of Rafi sahab who believe that there is a Rafi song every possible situation conceivable. But I was astonished to see this song from the film ‘ Hamlet ‘(1954). I saw this song for the first time some days back couldn’t believe it is being sung by the grave diggers. They are digging the grave and singing this happy sounding song talking of ‘badarwa’ ‘purwaiyya’ ‘doliyaa sajaayi’ ‘shaadi rachaayi’ etc. I have seen some songs which are morbid to look at and are playing in the background while a funeral is taking place or even when someone is on the deathbed. But was not expecting to find a song with actual grave digging. This must be unique and one of its kind song. It is true that anything can happen in a Hindi film.

After the eid song with “E” with Lata Mangeshkar and Rafi Sahab, let us move on to ‘F’. Easier said than done as my troubles start here, there being very few song starting with this alphabet. And among those few a good percentage of songs are already posted, like ‘ fariyaad na karna haay kahin fariyaad na karna ‘, ‘falsafa pyaar ka tum kya jaano’, ‘falak bola zameen boli’ etc.
