Voice of Mukesh #17
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Ah, finally. I have with me now, the song from the 1946 film ‘Durbaan’ that has been eluding me so far. Graciously and thankfully sent to me by another collector friend. Readers will recall that this is the one song from 1946, still waiting to be posted, as we traverse the early years of Mukesh’s career. As per records, by the end of 1946, Mukesh had sung 21 songs in eleven films (starting from 1941).

An affable presence, whether it be stage, screen or real life. And a soft and sweet voice – conversations of concern for humanity and society. A man of letters, well read, and well heard too, who continued to write till the end of his stay on this earth. A man of very impressive personality, who had the fortune of working with academic and social luminaries like Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Zakir Hussain and Mahatma Gandhi. Balraj Sahni, a personality who could empathize with the issues of poverty and unemployment, from personal firsthand experience. And when he passed away, and was placed in state at his residence, besides a copy of Bhagwadgita, there was also placed near him a copy of ‘Das Kapital’ of Karl Marx, and tiny bust of Lenin. A man of the masses, whose roles in films like ‘Dharti Ke Lal’(1946), ‘Hum Log’ (1951), ‘Do Beegha Zameen’ (1953), ‘Heera Moti’ (1959) are a hallmark of simplicity and reality, roles that are a reflection of the mind of a thinker and a sensitive human being. It is more than coincidental that his birth anniversary is today, 1st of May, the day dedicated to the labor class. Today (1 may 2013), we celebrate the century year of his birth.

The Voice of Mukesh #16

This delightful and endearing sound of a heart that is finding love for the first time, took me by surprise. And the song seems to be really rare, in that I am not able to locate any published version online so far.

Chris Gayle’s recent record breaking feat in the 20/20 match at Bangalore, nowhere near compares with Atul ji’s performance on this blog. 😀 😀

I would challenge Chris Gayle to continue scoring this way, even for just one more match. Oh, I am so confident that he will not be able to repeat his performance. Not very soon, and neither so convincingly. But on our blog, the centuries being posted by Atul ji are remarkable – consistent, and incessant in their regularity. Just two weeks, give or take a day, and there we are, another century notched up on the board.

“Door Koi Gaaye. . .”

The voice of these words has now gone away very far from us, to probably sing at and regale the ‘mehfils’ in heavens.

The Voice of Mukesh #15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

With the previous post in this series, we stepped into Mukesh’s world of 1947. His popularity and demand continued to increase. In this year, he has recorded 20 songs for nine films. Compare this with 7 songs for five films in 1946. We do recall that 1945 was good year for him, as he struck a chord of good fortune and popularity with the iconic song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, and had recorded 8 songs for three films, seven of them for ‘Pehli Nazar’ and ‘Moorti’. So, after a slow year in 1946, Mukesh seems to be coming into his own in 1947.

Sadanand Kamath’s writeup

I had not heard the name of the film BEETE DIN (1947). What prompted me to know about this film was a song ‘arshon pe sitaara hai wo’ from this film which is sung by Mukesh and M A Rauf (Osmania), one of the two music directors in the film. The song’s composition is somewhat different than what one usually finds in most of Hindi film songs. There is no repetition of lines of mukhda in the antaras. The tune is more or less the same for both the mukhda and antaras.

For some artists, it is never any effort on this blog to search new songs and track numbers posted. Their numbers continue to keep incrementing, just in the process of posting as it is. Some names are really apparent. Rafi Sb, Lata ji, Asha ji, Kishore Da etc. And hence, their milestones continue to occur, as a matter of routine, whatever may be the other compulsions to add new posts. (As I commented in an earlier post, the number of songs of Kishore Da showcased here seems proportionately lesser, only because he made his volumes in the 70s and 80s, and we have on this blog traditionally been focusing on the decades prior to that.)
