The world of non-film songs is altogether another dimension that is both very prolific, as well as very endearing. If we try to go after the non film domain, it would definitely turn out to be many times bigger than the film song domain. Rightly so, because in that domain there are no limits other than that the song does not belong to any film. On this blog, we are showcasing the non film genre also. But we are following an unstated selection criteria – that the singer(s) and or creators of the non film songs are otherwise associated with films. This criteria makes the expanse of the non film songs being covered (on this blog), both manageable and familiar.

“CID 909” (1967) was a Bindu Kala Mandir Production movie. The movie was produced by B D Kapoor and directed by Mohammad Hussain. The movie had Feroz Khan, Mumtaz, Bela Bose, Aruna,Roopesh Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Helen, Ram Mohan, Brahm Bhardwaj, Uma Dutt, Sherry(aka Mohan Sherry), Tuntun, Bela Bose, Paro, Paresh Kumar, Meenaxi, Rajan Kapoor, Master Shetty, Balaram, Nadir, Dhanraj, Kamal etc in it.

“Sangeet Samrat Tansen” (1962) was a labour of love for S N Tripathi. This movie was a Sur Sagar Chitra Production. It was directed by S N Tripathi. A movie was made on the fife of Tansen two decades ago and there the lead role was played by K L Saigal and the musical score of that movie was unparalleled. So S N Tripathi had a lot to live up to. It must be siad that the music of “Sangeet samrat Tansen” (1962) stood up to the scrutity very well. It is other matter that the movie, being a B grade movie, may not have created box office records. I am not awrae how this movie fared at the box office and I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

The union budget is being presented in the parliament today. Our able finance minister will be making this annual effort to analyze, manage and provide for the various expenses required to run this huge nation of almost 125 crore Indians. The success of the successive governments in honestly deciphering, managing and presenting a budget – well, it has been a questionable exercise over the years to say the least. The bane of the budget, and the misfortune of the entire nation, is the disastrous concept of deficit financing – a device used by the government (not just in India, but everywhere else in the world), wherein the budget outlay proposes expenses much more than the money that is there in government’s kitty.

The film titled ‘Baadshah’ (1964) was produced under the banner of Navkala Niketan, with Dara Singh and Nishi in lead roles. The film is a costume action drama, set in an unspecified time period, with all the regular components of palaces, kings, court dances, royal intrigues, and since Dara Singh in the hero – it also has feats of strength and hand to hand combat.

January 9th is the birth anniversary of Mahendra Kapoor and the death anniversary of Qamar Jalalabadi ( Om Prakash Bhandari). Qamar Jalalabadi had been writing songs for Hindi films since 1942. Who can forget “sun mere saajnaa” , an immortal song written by him in film AANSOO (1949) among many of his songs. The very fact that he had worked with almost all prominent music directors of his time is a testimony not only of his calibre as a lyricist but also of his pliable nature.

Luteraa (1965) is a musical bonanaza that boasts of absolutely fabulous music by Laxmikant Pyaarelal, who had just arrived on the music scene two years prior. All the songs in this film are veritable gems. In all seven songs are present in this film, all penned by Anand Bakshi. All the songs are dance songs, all songs are in female voices. Yes, interesting that there is not a single song in a male voice. Of the total seven songs, six of them are in Lata ji’s voice. As mentioned all are dance numbers, four of them performed by Nishi, who is the leading lady in this film, one by Helen and one by Bela Bose. All these six songs are already present on this blog.
