According to Wikipedia, “Born in 1926, Lakshmi Shankar started her career in dancing. In 1939, when Uday Shankar brought his dance troupe to Madras, (recently renamed Chennai), she joined the Almora Centre to learn Uday Shankar’s dance style based on the Indian classics, and became a part of his troupe. Varsha Ritu (1969) an album in an LP form was released by HMV to the delight of music lovers. Non-Film songs (NFS) were very much in vogue those days. Lata, Manna Dey, Begum Akhtar, Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Lakshmi Shankar, Sudha Malhotra and Mubarak Begum had each one NFS in that album. Music for all except the first three in this list was composed by an HMV staff artist Murli Manohar Swarup.

And for a period of almost two years (94 Sundays), an audience of almost 20 crore Indians would be glued to the TV sets. And in every episode, the audience was greeted with the rendition of the title song and shlokas, and the every episode was bid good bye with a verse that summarized the story, the state of affairs, and the learnings from the particular episode. These opening and ending title song and verses came through the telecast riding on the booming voice of the one and the only singer who could have made the impact with his voice. His rendition of the opening word ‘Mahaaa-Bhaaarat’ is now etched in the aural memory of the viewers. The voice that had the power to shake a thunder. Mahendra Kapoor – the only voice that could make it happen.

A couple of days ago, I sat down to search in my collection, only to so happily realize that I have a set of NFS songs of this artist. And yes, it is time that these songs were aired once again, to acknowledge him.
