KAAFILAA (1952) was produced under the banner of Munshi Productions and directed by Arvind Sen. Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant were in lead roles with Motilal, Ranjan, Amita, Nazir Hussain, Sunalini Devi etc in supporting roles. The film had 8 songs written by Vrajendra Gaud (5), Kavi Pradeep (2) and Moti (1) which were set to music by Husnlal-Bhagatram (HB). Three songs have already been covered in the blog. The film may have failed miserably on the box office as even sketchy information on the film’s story and synopsis is not available. But going by the star cast, the film may have had an intricate story not properly translated into a gripping presentation on the screen for the audience to appreciate it.

I am presenting a song which I had heard for the first time on an old gramophone record player in Chor Bazar in early 70s. I liked the song so much that I bought it, despite this 78 RPM gramophone record (No. N.50600) not being in a good condition. I must have heard this song many times during 70s and 80s. Thereafter, I could not play this song as my record player had become unserviceable apart from becoming almost an obsolete item.

The year was 1935 and New Theatres’ ‘Devdas’ (1935) was making waves across Indian sub-continent with K L Saigal’s mesmerising songs. One of Bomaby’s film production companies, Sagar Movietone felt that it should also have an actor-singer of the caliber of K L Saigal to counter the ‘Saigal effect’. A film distributor brought a young and tall handsome lawyer to Bombay and arranged his meeting with Mehboob Khan, the director associated with Sagar Movietone. Mehboob Khan found qualities in this man which he felt could be an answer to K L Saigal. The name of that handsome lawyer was Surendra Nath Sharma better known in Hindi film industry as Surendra or Surendranath.

Last year, I had written an article for this blog on saajan tum se pyaar karoon main from the film BADNAAM (1952) as a tribute to Basant Prakash, the music director of the film. Recently, I came across another lovely song ‘le jaa apni yaad bhi le jaa’ from the same film. This song has some similarity in music composition with that of preet ye kaisee bol ree duniya from “Daag’ (1952). Even the metres of both these songs, more or less, match. Incidentally, both these songs were penned by Shailendra and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. So one link led to another and in the event, I noted the following interesting observations concerning these two films.
