There were some Hindi films which either flopped or just made it to be the average performers at the box office after they had theatrical release. But over the years, they have attained the status of cult classics. The films in my minds are, Chetan Anand’s ‘Neecha Nagar’ (1946) for pioneering the parallel cinema, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956) for its social commentary, Guru Dutt’s ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) for its cinematic style, Dev Anand’s ‘Guide’ (1965) for its progressive themes, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970) for its philosophical depth and ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ (1983) for raising a couple of serious issues facing the country in a satirical way. The list is not exhaustive. I also feel that I should add ‘Shakti’ (1982) in this list for the powerful performances of Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan as father and son, respectively who are in the opposite side of the law.

People who grew up in 1980s and earlier and who were into watching Hindi movies would recall that movie magazines of those days would carry news about movies that were in the making. Some movie buffs would keep track of the progress of movies containing their favourite actors.

“Shakti” (1948) was directed by S I Hassan for Greater Bombay Pictures production. The movie had Karan Dewan, Suraiyya, Kailash, Sofia, Maya Devi, Seeta Bose, Cuckoo, Mumtaz Ali, Murad etc in it.
