When I was growing up as a kid in late 1960s and early 1970s, I noticed that old movie makers tended to give their movies the same title as the titles of new movies. 🙂 When radio announcer announced songs from “Andaaz”, “Aankhen”,”Aarzoo”,”Adaalat”, “Parwarish” etc, I expected to listen to songs from the newer movies of 1960s and 1970s and I was very upset when the songs played were from old movies of 1940s and 1950s, which were boring by my definition.

Mukesh was brought to Bombay (now Mumbai) in late 1930s by Motilal (a distant relative) who had seen him singing a song at Motilal’s sister’s wedding. While at Bombay, Mukesh got the opportunity to act and sing in a movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). This movie also had Nalini Jaiwant.It is interesting to note that Mukesh first acted in movies in 1940s, whereas his grandson (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is acting in movies more than six decades later. Though I am aware of most songs from “Mother India” (1957), I was just not aware about this song from the movie. In fact, I was not aware that Manna Dey had sung a song in this movie.

Here is a mourning song from “Batwaaraa” (1961). No one had died. It is the age old relations that have are getting severed though. The two brothers, who lived under the same roof, now want to partition the home as they cannot see eye to eye with each other. So a wall is being erected right in front of the courtyard to partition the house into two.

“Husn Ka Chor”(1953) was a Wadia movietone movie, starring Mahipal and Usha Kiran. The movie as well as its music have become too obscure to find with time.

I had never heard of this movie called “Angaarey” (1954) not had I heard any songs from this movie. This movie had Nasir Khan and Nargis in it alongwith Pran and others.

Some times name of the movie gives you an idea what to expect. If the title of a movie begins with the adjective “Chhoti” and it is followed by a common noun depicting a female person then you can expect a movie full of sacrifices and sad songs. Movie makers have left no such combination unused while choosing titles for their movies.
