When I was growing up, I used to hear that the story of Hindi movies mostly consisted of hero and heroine falling in love with each other and then singing songs running around trees.

Songs in which actors, especially male actors would accuse female actors of “bewafaayi” were quite common in Hindi movies. Such songs would often be sung in isolation, but often such songs would be sung in get together/ parties too. The male actor would go on with his accusation and the female would feel embarrased as well as guilty in full public view. The public, viz the other participants in the party would consist of people standing/ sitting in their positions like statues.

Though most Hindi movie songs draw their inspirations from indigenous sources (classical music, folk music etc) there are songs that are inspired from western music. In late 1950s, rock and roll music had caught up in Hindi movies in a big way and there were quite a few such songs in Hindi movies those days. Music directors like C Ramchandra and Vinod, to mention a few, were composing quite a few rock and roll kind of songs those days.

After posting four songs for the day, I suddenly realised that today is 16th november, Roshan’s death anniversary. My original plan was to discuss only Roshan songs and a total of five Roshan songs today. I can do that even now, but that would be an overkill. So I am going to discuss two Roshan songs today.

“Albela”(1951) was the biggest hit of Bhagwan’s career. It was the first time he made an A grade movie and reaped rich dividends. It is another matter that he could not capitalise on this success and soon he was back to making B grade movies again, in addition to acting as a comedian.
