Today’s song is from the film ‘Ghar ki Izzat'(1948).

India got Independence in 1947 and there was a huge exchange of people between India and the newly created religion based Pakistan. This affected the film industry in India extensively as the majority of Muslim artistes from all the departments of film making lined up for migration. As soon as the final announcement of Partition was made and the date of Independence was announced, the film industry worked extra time to finish the projects on hand before the migration, causing damage to the quality of films made in 1947 in the latter half. Though this resulted in creating a record number of films made in 1947 (181 in Hindi and 100 in other languages), most films could get a release only in 1948.

Today’s song is from the social film Minister-1959.

The 1950s and the early 60s was the period in which the Hindi film industry churned out films which tried to glorify the impractical approaches to real problems, under the guise of Indian traditions. This was in line with what Nehru espoused as Socialism. Unfortunately, it took the Indian public farther from reality and instead of advancing, we went back another two decades. It was only after the war with China in 1962 and demise of Nehru in 1964, the wheels turned the right way slowly after winning the war of 1965 with Pakistan, under the leadership of Shastri ji, India knew and understood what was necessary for the country to progress. After Indira Gandhi took over and implemented certain strong measures, the influence on Indian people changed for the better.

Today’s song is from the stunt film – Hunterwali ki Beti-1943.

This is perhaps the only film in a Hindi cinema,so far, where the same actress has done the role of a young woman in a film and again did the role of her daughter in the same film. There are some Hindi films which double roles have been done by a few actresses, of mother and daughter in the same film. What makes today’s film different is its Title.

Today’s song is from the film Gol Nishan-1936.

The first Talkie film came in 1931. The first year had just 24 films, but within a span of 3 years, the Talkie films crossed the century mark, with 121 films in 1934, 152 in 1933 and 134 in 1936. Making a film was a complicated process which needed a studio, the latest machinery and a lot of money. This was difficult for a single person and thus the Studio System got established. The studios ruled the industry and the film making. Films were sold on the names of the studios and the actors had secondary appeal to the audience.

Every year, hundreds of Hindi feature films are certified by Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Just for a sample check, I found that for the years 1951-1980, on an average, 100-120 Hindi features films had been certified/released. I am sure the number of Hindi films certified/released in the subsequent decades must have increased significantly. There were many Hindi feature films which had been shot but got shelved or remained incomplete or if completed, remained unreleased. I checked on the websites of Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA) and Producers Guild of India (GUILD) for the list of such films. Unfortunately, no such information is available on the website. It is one more example of the poor upkeep of film related statistics.
