Time passes incessantly. And this relentless movement tends to become monotonous, if it were not for celebrations and festivals that punctuate the continuity of this passage. Time of the year again, for specific festivals and celebrations. A new enthusiasm and a new zest – to be doing new things differently.

My interest in Urdu ghazals is as old as my interest in Hindi film songs of the golden era. For me, Talat Mehmood, Madan Mohan, Sahir Ludhinavi, Kaifi Azmi were synonymous with filmy ghazals of golden period. Of course, I was already aware of one of the greatest Urdu poets of Indian sub-continent, Allama Iqbal’s name associated with ‘saare jahaan se achcha Hindustan hamaara’ from my school days. The ghazals of the film ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) expanded my horizon of Urdu poetry of Mirza Ghalib and some other poets like Daagh through non-filmy ghazals. From 1972 onwards, TV became a major medium through which I could watch the programmes of Urdu ghazal singing covering singers like Rajkumar Rizvi and his wife Indrani Rizvi, Rajendra Mehta and his wife Neena Mehta, Chandan Das, Peenaz Masani, Talat Aziz and many more.

Writeup by Atul
————————–
So the eagerly awaited moment is here. It was planned to happen on 19 july 2014, on the sixth anniversary of the blog, but that was not to be and it has finally happened one day later. Paucity of time necessitated by urgent personal and even official engagements/ matters were the cause for this delay by one day. I also had to reluctantly defer three eagerly awaited writeups, viz introductory posts on M/s Arunkumar Deshmukh, Raja and Sudhir ji. They very graciously agreed to have their introductions deferred in view of the circumstances. I am very thankful for their understanding.

If one notices, the lion’s share of the writeups for the last few days have been done by Sudhir ji. He has been spending unimaginable hours on the blog for the last few days despite being tied up in his own personal and professional engagements. And this 10000th post is very much a result of his own initiative, meticulous research and hard work. My heartfelt thanks goes to Sudhir ji without whom this blog would not be what it is today.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 2)
——————————–

When films started ‘ Talking’, the industry needed actresses who could look good and sing well. Already hard pressed to get girls from educated respectable families, the producers turned to professional singers (Tawayafs) or the Courtesans. These girls knew Hindi/Urdu well, were trained in singing and were experts in handling people. They could and actually did replace the Anglo Indian girls, who had been in the industry since the Silent era, but who found it difficult to talk or sing in Hindi/Urdu. There were some enterprising Anglo Indian girls like Sabita Devi or Irina Gasper, who learnt speaking Hindi and singing just to continue their careers successfully. Later on she made a Hit pair with Motilal in many films, starting with Shehar ka jaadu-1934.

THE JOY OF NFS (Song No. 1)
——————————–

MUSIC is an integral part of every Indian. From birth to death, we are drenched in music. During Vedic times, the Rishis used to teach their students verses in Taal and Sur, so that the students would remember them easily. You will have observed that whenever there is a Mahapooja or an Yadnya, the Purohits will recite the Mantras in a typical rhythm and sur.

“Street Singer” (1938) was directed by Phani Majumdar for New Theatres. The movie brought together K L Saigal and Kanan Devi together for the first time. This movie was a sumptuous musical feast as it contained 13 songs in it. As many as nine songs from this movie have been covered in the blog.

Before the advent of cinemas in India, Parsi theatres played the role of a catalyst for transmitting social, historical, political and religious messages to the people at large. The owners of theatres were rich and educated Parsis. Alfred Theatrical Company of Bombay (Mumbai) and Madan Theatres Ltd. in Calcutta (Kolkata) were two of the prominent theatre companies. With the successful staging of some of the plays by these two theatre companies, the audience from all the strata of the society and of different religious background started patronising the plays. The themes of the plays were diversified to cater the needs of the audience. With this, the theatre companies were always looking for play writers and stage actors.
