In the 1940s, there were four main Hindi/Urdu/Hindusani movie producing centres in India, viz. Bombay (Mumbai), Calcutta (Kolkata), Lahore and Poona (Pune).
Bombay (Mumbai) had Ranjit Movietone, Calcutta (Kolkata), the New Theatres and Poona (Pune) had Prabhat Films as leading producers of Hindi/Urdu films. Lahore centre was dominated by Pancholi Art Pictures owned by Dalsukh Pancholi. He was also the owner of Lahore’s biggest film studio, Pancholi Art Studio during pre-independent period.

“Majboor”(1948) was directed by Nazir Ajmeri for Bombay talkies. The star-cast had Munavvar Sultana and Shyam in lead roles and they were supported by Indu, Sohan Lal, Jagannath, Dar Kashmiri, Ganju, Shama Gulnar, Ameer Bano, Shivraj, Ram Shashtri, Lakshman Rao, Manto Bai etc.

“Aaiye” (1949) was directed by Yakoob for Indian Production, Bombay. This movie had Yakoob, Sulochana Chatterji, Masood, Ashraf Khan, Janki Das, Sheila Naik, Tasneem, Charlie, Wali Muhammad, Munshi Munaqqa, Abu Bakar, Saleem, Muhammad Ali, Gaffar, Mubarak Begam, Baby Mumtaz etc in it.

Hindi talkies got their start in the 1930s. Hindi Film Music, which started with them, took their own time to find their bearings. Their transition phase lasted several years when they underwent many changes (some of them path breaking ones) before HFM finally found their feet and settled down and got consolidated by 1940s.
I regard this transition phase of Hindi film music as the phase where solid foundation was laid that paved the way for the take off stage for the golden period of Hindi film music of the 50s and 60s.

Today’s song is from Safar-46. It was a Filmistan presentation which was the first film of C.Ramchandra in this company.
C.Ramchandra had worked in Jayant Desai Productions for the previous three years. He gave 5 jubilee films, Bhaktaraj-43,Zabaan-43, Manorama-44, Lalkaar-44, and Samrat Chandragupta-45 for this production house. He was getting only Rs.300 as salary. He had got married and needed more money now.
