Today (13 november 2012) is Deewaali, the festival of light. This is the fifth Deewaali festival for this blog, which is quite an achievement for us, seeing that this blog has not just survived for such a long time, but has in fact progressed and thrived. It is interesting to note the striking similarities in the musical career of S D Burman and Hemant Kumar though the latter was 14 years younger than the former. Both started their musical careers as singers in the 30s followed by composing many non-filmy Bengali and Hindi songs in Calcutta (Kolkatta). Both started their Hindi filmy careers as music directors under the banner of Filmistan – S D Burman in Shikhar (1946) and Hemant Kumar in ‘Anand Math’ (1952).

I was aware of “Shaan” (1980) but it is news to me that a movie with this title was released in 1950 too. “Shaan” (1950) was a Kuldeep pictures production. It was directed by Jayant Desai. The movie had Rehman, Suraiya, Amar, David Abraham, Sapru, Pratima Devi, Cuckoo etc in it.

When one talked of a movie called “Sargam” in my younger days, the only movie of this name that I was aware of was the Rishi Kapoor Jayaprada movie of 1980. Later I came to know that a movie of the same title was released in 1950 too which was a Filmistan production. “Sargam” (1950) was directed by P L Santoshi. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Rehana, Om Prakash, Mumtaz Ali, Paro, Ratan Kumar, Chandabai, Rajendra, David Abraham, Tabassum, Radha Krishnan, Samson, Vijayalaxmi, Ramsingh, S. L. Puri, Sudesh etc in it.
