#The Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
(Celebrating ‘Saawan’-2025-2)
——————————-
#Desh Kee Mittee Kee Khushboo#

The month of saawan is at its peak. Activities like visiting temples, offering prayers, having get-togethers and visiting nearby tourist places reach their peak in this season. This Sunday there a was trip arranged by the family club of the colony at my new workplace. However, I could not participate in that due to other priorities. People from my department who were part of this trip told me that the place they visited had a big farm with a ‘lake/pond’ around and a temple of goddess. The snacks and lunch were arranged from the canteen at our work place only and people enjoyed ‘antaaksharee’, housie, playing games and relaxing in the midst of lush green fields around. We in India celebrate nature, and we celebrate seasons. We pay our respect to nature through many customs and rituals. Different religious and spiritual activities are practiced during this period. People all over the country follow these customs, rituals, and traditions with some local variations.

Today’s song is from the film Dr.Z-1959.

When I first saw the title of this film, I thought it to be a Sci- Fi film. In the period of the 1950s and the 1960s many Sci Fi films from Hollywood were coming to India and our clever filmmakers used to grab the story matter. By making few changes in the story to protect themselves from legal action (like the film Begunah-1957), Hindi films were made by them. It is not that there was a shortage of good stories or there were no creative story writers in the industry, but many B and C grade filmmakers found this method profitable and saleable. In those days, a certain section of the film audience was devoted to such films.

However, when I found later – to my dismay – that this was just an ordinary crime story film mixed with a Love story, I was disappointed. looking at its cast, director and the Music director, one could easily guess the type of film that it was. The title of the film was supposed to arouse the interest of the fixed audience.

Somewhere in the late 2011 AK ji, of Songsofyore.com, had written on this Blog about the importance of NFS. After reading his views, I too wrote a rather lengthy comment supporting the inclusion of NFS on this Blog. Our contention was that, prior to Hindi Film Music becoming popular all over India, it was those ghazals, Geets and Bhajans, privately sung and recorded by various artists which had ruled the tastes of music lovers. In fact many famous singers had recorded NFS in the beginning phase of their singing careers. Some names are Talat Mehmood, Saigal, Pankaj Mullick, Jagmohan and Juthika Roy !

Today’s song is from the film Bade Bhaiya-1951.

From the title it seemed to be a family drama, but in reality this was a love story of 2 brothers, with the background of a Carnival and its various shows. This is what I call a misleading title !

The film was made by Super Pictures, Bombay, owned by the film’s Director Aspy Irani. The Parsi community of Bombay made a lot of contribution to the early cinema. Remember that the very first Talkie film made in India was by Ardeshir Irani, a Parsi who owned a premier studio and a filmmaking organisation -The Imperial Film company, Bombay. Over a period, the Parsis found other interests and their participation in filmmaking reduced. However, some of the great and memorable actors and directors like Sohrab Modi, the Billimorea brothers, Pearl Padamsee, Boman Irani etc kept the Persian Presence in Hindi films going.

Today’s song is from a failed, potent comedy film Andher Nagari Chaupat Raja-1955.

The film was made by Chitramahal, Bombay and produced by Ashalata Biswas- ex wife of Music Director Anil Biswas. Though she had separated from Anil Biswas in 1954 itself, she continued using his surname till she was in films. The film was directed by Shamim Bhagat, about whom my guess is that he may be Ashalata Biswas’s brother. Her name before marriage was Meharunnisa Bhagat. The Music Director of this film was Avinash Vyas, ably assisted by Sanmukh babu Upadhyaya, who later on became an independent MD for film Lalkar-1956. He gave music to only 7 Hindi films, mostly B and C grade films. The cast of the film was Chitra, Amarnath, Gope, Umadevi and many others.

Today’s song is a chorus song from the Mythological film Hanuman Patal Vijay-1951.

I liked to see and enjoyed Mythological films. This was primarily due to the exposure to such films since early childhood. Thanks to the elders in our huge joint family, I got appointed as their caretaker who would take a group of elders to see such films. That is why from childhood I developed a religious mindset. However, my father ensured to impress on me that Religion is strictly a personal matter and one must decide how much importance one should give to Religion in one’s life. I have followed this principle till today and I treat all religions with the same reverence. Excess or exhibition of Religion must be avoided. This is my opinion.

Today’s song is from the film Alladin ka Beta-1955.

Can there be a child who has not read the story of Alibaba or Alladin or Sindbad the sailor ? All of us have read these stories in our younger days, but not many know that these stories are from ‘Arabian Nights’ or ‘The 1001 Nights’.

These are collections of stories from West and south Asia. The history of this book is very complex.Suffice to say that it is a composite work and that the earliest tales came from India and Persia. Perhaps in the 8th century, these were translated into Arabic and authors from every generation went on adding stories to it. However, the basic Frame story remains the same for centuries.
