In the 30s and 40s, two groups of female actor-singers emerged prominently. The first group excelled in both acting and singing. Barring a few exceptions, they confined to playback singing on themselves. This group consisted mainly of Khursheed, Kanan Devi, Noor Jahan and Suraiya. The second group though started their filmy career as actor-singer in a smaller way, later they concentrated mainly on playback singing. This group comprised mainly of Rajkumari, Amirbai Karnataki, and Zohrabai Ambalewaali.

An old adage – they say that the real geniuses leave early. Many an instance are scattered all over the history timeline. Gosh, she was still 4 months short of her 40th birthday when she gave up her resistance to the personal tragedies and tribulations, making her way out of the miserable labyrinths of control and manipulations that she was subjected to most of her life. Ah but, what a color her own life, rubbed on to her on screen persona, as she moved from one perfection to the next in the tragic milieu of tangled relationships and human miseries. A performer too young, too vivacious, to be baptized as the Tragedy Queen. And the vicious circle moved from real life to screen and back, so many times over, that her cup of life proved to be diminutive, unable to hold all the sorrows that the world put in it.

Welcome all to yet another century milestone on this blog. Habit forming, and on the dot, never missing a beat. The regularity is so predictable, that we can set our calendars accordingly. A hundred new songs on the blog – ah yes, about 18 days must have passed. Kudos to Atul ji for managing and controlling the pace of new songs, no matter what.

The autobiography of C Ramchandra( Majhya Jeevana chi Sargam-copyright by Yeshwant Ramchandra Chitalkar) is somewhat disappointing. Its major part is spent on describing various exploits of C Ramchnadra with different women. Normally one expectes that the writer would focus on his worldly achievements and creations, which gave him name and fame, but on this count this book is a failure. Not that it is totally bereft of such things, but considering his musical successes during the Golden Era, one feels deprived of more discussions on music related topics.
