“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) is a movie based on the life of legendary Urdu Poet Mirza Ghalib. This movie had most of its songs based on Mirza Ghalib’s poems, so in effect, Ghalib himself is the lyricist of most songs of this movie, even though he had dead for some one hundred years by the time this movie was made.

It is a well known fact that people in general and movie actors in particular remember God only when they are in trouble. And once in trouble, they resort to emotional blackmail to make God help them. And God in Hindi movies being soft hearted, tends to give in rather easily.

Hemant Kumar was one of those all rounders who was equally competent in singing as well as composing songs. And though he was a music director, he was not averse to singing under the music direction of others. That way, he is different from other music directors, who mostly sang only under their own music direction. Hemant Kumar, on the other hand , sang under the direction of several leading music directors of those days.

Hindi movies called “Dost” seem to get released every decade. The first such movie was “Dost” (1944) and it had memorable music by Sajjad Hussain. In my days, another movie by this name, viz “Dost” (1974) was released which had memorable music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. There was no movie by this name in 1964, though there was a movie called “Dosti” (1964), which again had memorable songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Most music lovers, including yours truly, are aware of only one song from “Naukri” (1954) and that song is the evergreen Chhota sa ghar hoga baadalon ki chhaaon me. But there are other songs in it that are created with the same amount of love and care and those songs are also wonderful to listen to, if we only care to listen to them. These days I am digging these songs out and I am finding that these forgotten songs are gems.
