Chali pi ke nagar ab kaahe ka dar

Posted on: December 21, 2010

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) is a movie based on the life of legendary Urdu Poet Mirza Ghalib. This movie had most of its songs based on Mirza Ghalib’s poems, so in effect, Ghalib himself is the lyricist of most songs of this movie, even though he had dead for some one hundred years by the time this movie was made.

But there are songs in this movie that are written by more contemporary lyricists.

Here is a wedding song from this movie. In this song, the sahelis of Suraiyya and singing on the eve of Suraiyya’s wedding.

This song is sung by Shamshad Begam and it is picturised on a young looking Kumkum. The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni and he has come up with cute lyrics. The song is clearly inspired by the Hindi saying (“Jab sainyya bhaye kotwaal to dar kaahe ka”- viz one need have no worry she has the incharge of law enforcement as her husband).

The light hearted and melodious song is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

dewaraa ko main doongi nikaal
more
ho more baanke balam kotwaal
ho more baanke balam kotwaal
chali pi ke nagar ab kaahe kaa dar
more baanke
ho more baanke balam kotwaal
ho more baanke balam kotwaal
