Beqaraar hai koi

“Shama Parwaana” (1954) was one of the first movies of Shammi Kapoor. And in this movie, he was paired up opposite a top heroine of the day, namely Suraiyya. In Bollywood movies, leading ladies as often treated as pieces of decoration. It is heratening to see that leading lads too can get the same treatment. In Shammi Kapoor’s earlier movies, especially where he was pitted against star names like Suraiyya, Suraiyya got all the limelight and Shammi Kapoor was left playing the second fiddle. 🙂

“Shama Parwaana” (1954) was a movie that had Suraiyya and Shammi Kapoor in lead roles. This movie had some nice songs that have been largely forgotten by now.

One interesting genre of Bollywood songs is the one kind where the leading man/ leading lady reach the villain’s hideout and keep him amused by singing and dancing. The villains must be severely entertainment starved, seeing how eager they are in watching the song and dance performance. and this allows the colleagues of the dancing persons to enter the den unnoticed. 😉

“Jaagriti” (1954) was an idealistic movie that was produced just a few years after Indian independence when people of India were in an idealisting and nation building mode. Several songs of this movie went on to become iconic songs. It is in this movie that we have songs like “Aao bachhon tumhen dikhaayen jhaaki Hindustaan ki” and “De di hamen aazaadi bina khadg bina bhaal”.

I have come to to the realisation by now that most old Bollywood movies were musical blockbusters by default. It meant that each of these movies had several nice songs contained in them.

I had not heard about this movie called “Mehbooba” (1954). Now I know that this was a movie starring Shammi Kapoor and Nalini Jaiwant. Though it must be said that Shammi Kapoor was more like a struggler than a star at that time.

I had never heard of this movie called “Pehli Jhalak”, but there was one movie by this name in 1954. And now that I have stumbled upon the songs of this movie, I have realised that this movie has some lovely songs in it.

There are a few people who say that “Shabaab” (1954) was one where Naushad gave his best music. I hope the people who hold this opinion are aware that Naushad was the music director of movies like “Baiju Baawra”, Mughal e Azam” etc as well. There are others who feel that “Baiju Baawra” could be the best creation of Naushad.

Kuchh bhi na bolenge

Suraiyya, who ruled the roost as am actor-singer gradually ran out of steam in 1950s. The fact that she would sing only for herself meant that as her demand as an actress fell, she stopped getting singing offers as well.
