Today’s song is from the ‘Social’ film – Sara Jahan Hamara-1961.

I do not understand on what basis filmmakers give titles to their films. This film is categorised as a ‘Social’ film in HFGK. The film story has a murder, lootmar, girl trading, fighting, court, Jail and such things. Embedded in all this there is a Love story. In my opinion, the film should have been classified either as a stunt/action film or a crime/mystery film.

Anyway, it is always a mystery how the film makers decide the titles of their films. When I rummaged through the The Film Title index book (1931-2012) by Hamraz ji, I found some interesting titles.

Today, September 03, 2025 is the 28th Remembrance Day of a well-known lyricist who wrote more than 1300 songs in over 300 films. His name was Lalji Pandey but his college friends gave him a pseudo name, ‘Anjaan’ while participating in mushaira in the college functions as well as elsewhere. He retained this pseudo name when he started writing articles, poems and later lyrics.

Anjaan (28/10/1930 – 03/09/1997) was born in Odar village, about 30 kms from Banaras. His father was working as a peon in Central Bank of India, Banaras. After completing the primary school in his village, Anjaan came to Banaras and completed high school. His father was keen that he also joins the bank services like him. So, he put him in commerce stream of Banaras Hindu University from where he passed B.Com. In this way, Anjaan became the first graduate from his village.

Hullo Atuldom

“Hamjoli” (1970) was produced by Prasan Kapoor for Tirupati Pictures meaning it was Jeetendra’s home production. T. R. Ramanna was the director.

“”Hamjoli” was the remake of the 1964 Tamil hit ‘Panakkara Kudumbam’ (transl. Rich Family) starring M. G. Ramachandran. That film released on 24 April 1964, and ran for more than 150 days in theatres. The film was remade in Hindi in 1970 as ‘Humjoli’, in Kannada in 1978 as ‘Bhale Huduga’, and in Telugu in 1984 as ‘Intiguttu’. All versions except ‘Intiguttu’ were directed by the same director, T. R. Ramanna.

Mukesh and his Composers – 42

What do these three films have in common?
• Footpath (1953)
• Shola aur Shabnam (1961)
• Shagoon (1964)

Well, it’s no brainteaser. Khayyam saab scored music for all the above quoted films.

But then a lesser-known trivia is the name of Vipin Mehra who was the assistant music director in all the three films.

This post is in memory of legendary singer Mukesh on his Remembrance Day (22 July 1923 to 27 August 1976).

The post is also in memory of arguably Mukesh’s greatest fan and compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh, Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji(15 October 1949 to 27 August 2024), who passed away on the same day and month last year (on 27 August 2024).

At the outset, as I pen down my 100th post on this unique blog, I take the opportunity to express my heartfelt and sincere thanks to Atul ji for providing this platform on a platter for Hindi Film Music aficionados to not only contribute thoughts on films and songs but also flex flairs for writing.

Today’s song in memory of Mukesh and Harish ji is easily available but is unique in the sense that the details about the making of this song are not available in public domain.

Today, August 24, 2025, is the 25th Remembrance Day of Kalyanji of the music director duo, Kalyanji-Anandji. Surprisingly, none of the two brothers had any inkling of becoming music director when Anandji started his amateure orchestra group doing live variety stage shows in around Girgaum area. Kalyanji, his elder brother joined this group after completion of his boarding school where he had learn to play various musical instruments.

Kalyanji (30/06/1928 0 24/08/2000) was born to Virji Shah, a Jain businessman from Kutch who migrated to Mumbai in early 20th century to set up the grocery and dry-fruit shops in Mangalwadi, Girgaum area of South Mumbai, a predominately Marathi and Gujarati speaking region. While Kalyanji was sent to a boarding school, Anandji, his 5 year junior younger brother joined the local school. In those days, there were many film personalities like V Shantaram, Durga Khote, Shanta Apte, Kikubhai Desai (father of Subhash and Manmohan Desai), some crew members and the film musicians staying in Girgaum. Anandji learnt percussions from a music teacher in lieu of his outstanding grocery bills of his father’s shop. However, his Jain mother did not allow him to bring the Dholak at home because it had animal skin. So, he had to keep his Dholak at his music teacher’s house. Similarly, he gained some working knowledge of Hindustani classical music when he started giving tanpura accomplishment to a Hindustani classical vocalist of his locality during her practice session for which she would give him a chocolate as reward.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Badmaash-1969’. This movie was introduced on this blog by our Shree Sudhir jee with its song ‘uthhaa palkein milaa nazren’ on the blog. This movie was then a ‘missing movie’ for the blog. I guess this movie was a very rare and obscure movie and it continues to remains so.

“Badmaash-1969” was a stunt movie which was directed by B.J. Patel for Saras Chitra, Bombay. It had Sheikh Mukhtar, Helen, Chandrashekhar, Padma, N.A. Ansari, Vishva Mehra, Dalda, Shashimala, Satyen Kapoor, Jilani, Chandrakala, Surya Kumar, Bhagwan, Rachna, Jayshree, Satish Vyas, Nawab, Jaswant, Ajit, Abdul Sattar, Nanak, Motu, Nandini Desai and others. This movie ‘Badmaash-1969’ has four songs composed by Avinash Vyas. Lyricist for all the four songs is Anjaan. The singers list mentioned in HFGK has Krishna Kalle and Mahendra Kapoor as singers for this movie. However for one song the singer’s name is not mentioned in HFGK.
