guzar gaye ae jo haseen zamaaney
khayaal mein phir ubhar rahey hain
udaas dil ki bujhee umangon
mein ik nayaa rang bhar rahey hain
guzar gaye ae jo o
ye kaisey mumkin hai hamnasheenon
ke dil ko dil kee khabar naa pahunchey
ye kaisey mumkin hai hamnasheenon
ke dil ko dil kee khabar na pahunchey
ye kaisey mumkin hai hamnasheenon
ke dil ko dil kee khabar na pahunchey
khabar na pahunchey
unhein bhi hum yaad aathey hongey
ke jin ko hum yaad kar rahey hain
guzar gaye jo haseen zamaaney
khayaal mein phir ubhar rahey hain
guzar gaye jo o o
woh bewafaa to naheen hai lekin
ye bewafaayee naheen to kyaa hai
woh bewafaa to naheen hai lekin
ye bewafaayee naheen to kyaa hai
woh bewafaa to naheen hai
lekin ye bewafaayee naheen to kyaa hai
naheen to kyaa hai
churaa ke nazrein jo yoon tasawwur
mein saamney se guzar rahey hain
guzar gaye jo haseen zamaaney
khayaal mein phir ubhar rahey hain
guzar gaye ae ae ae ae ae jo o o

“Toofaan”(1969) was produced by S J Rajdeo and directed by Radhakant for Sargam Chitra, Bombay. This movie had Dara Singh, Anita, N.A.Ansari, Helen, adhumati, Bipin Gupta, Azad, Shabana, Sabeena, Johny Whisky, Rajan Kapoor, Jeevankala, Ratnamala, Aravind Pandya, Uma Datt, Dilip Dutt, Shri Bhagwan, Uma Khosla, Raja Bhai, Chandrakant, Master Dillu, Baby Shamshad, Ram Rasila, Dalpat Bhai, Yaseen, Badshah, Maulana, Maqbool etc in it.
“Toofaan”(1969) had five songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.
Today (18 june 2020) is the remembrance day of music director Daan Singh. (1927- 18 june 2011). He did not get too many opportiunities in HFM, but he created immortal songs in the few movies that he got. For instance, “My Love”(1970) had sucj=h timeless classics as Wo tere pyaar ka gham and Zikr hota hai jab qayamat ka .
His unreleased movie “Bhool Na Jaana” had such timeless classics as Gham e dil kisase kahoon , Mere humnasheen mere humnawaan and Pukaaro mujhe naam lekar pukaaro .
What a pity that “Toofaan”(1969) and “My Love” (1970) were the only released movie of Daan Singh during his heydays. Much later, he got to compose music in “Bawander”(2000), but true to his wretched luck, here also the songs were not picturised and they are available only in audio form.
As a tribute to Daan Singh, here is an all female duet from “Toofaan”(1969). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Akhtar Romani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Daan Singh.
Only the audio of the song is available. The video of the movie and the song do not appear to be available online as of now. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

For me, this is a crush that still endures – a crush that I have never gotten over. Since the days when I first saw her in ‘Talash’ (1969) – and the song – “Kar Le Pyaar Karne Ke Din Hain Yahi” – a part of me has always remained smitten with her image and her thoughts. Helen, aah Helen – the ultimate danseuse of the silver screen. Helen – whose art has established the gold benchmark as a dancer, for all measures – from the past, and maybe, forever in the future. For sincerely, till this time, no other dancer has come close to this ultimate – in grace, in innovation, in energy, in movement – in every aspect of this art form.
It is said that the classical dance forms of India, are probably the most expressive traditional dances. The dancers are coached to develop the enhanced expressions for all the human emotions. The artist is taught not just to exhibit a series of well coordinated movements, which of course is very pleasing to the senses, but it is imperative for them to also communicate the emotions through the facial expressions, body language and the finer movements like twitching and trembling of specific muscles and body parts. The art of the Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Khatakali, etc. is so very refined in this aspect, and the aspiring artists are trained from a very young age.
As far as I am aware, Helen simply started dancing in films (in her teens, as early as when she was 13). She probably has no formal training in any dance form. And yet, seeing Helen on screen, in all the dancing forms, is an experience that flows across and covers the entire spectrum of human emotions and human exchange. In a career that spans almost seven decades, from the end of 1940s to the present day, she has likely appeared in 600+ films, and has regaled the audiences with that many colors and flavors of practically any dance form that may exist on this planet – rhumba, prancing, conga, frolic, folk, swing, rock n’ roll, spin, skip, step, samba, kabuki, disco, cabaret, jive, jump, cha cha cha, foxtrot, cavort, flamenco, waltz, boogie, santoso, flit, jig, jitterbug, hustle, gambol, polka, hop, sway, bunny hop, tap, shimmy, careen, salsa, mambo etc. – and of course, lavani and bhangra too. 🙂
Seeing her in so many different avatars of dancing, one is convinced that rhythm is naturally ingrained into her, and that there is almost a divine intervention here that allows her to pick up any choreography and perform exceedingly pleasing movements to it. The expression of emotions come to her so naturally – and the graceful flow of movements that is so excellently effortless – when she is in front of the camera, she actually knows what she is into. Such realization in the mind brings about a natural performance that simply cannot be executed in any better way. Unlike many of her ilk that have also performed on the Indian screen – yes, she knows, she is fully aware of what she is into.
There are a handful of rare performances by her that are not accompanied by any song. One of the finest, and in my humble opinion, her best such performance is a songless dance from the film ‘Hulchul’ (1971). Folks may remember this stage dance – for the variety of dance forms that are packed into this maybe 9 or 10 minutes performance, the multiple emotions that flow through it, and the significant message this dance experience is attempting to convey. (I tried to bring on this dance clip to our blog, but Atul ji is uncertain whether it qualifies. 😉 Maybe, I will try again.)
For me and my puppy-love heart, Helen is an ageless wonder that I adore. Sweet sixteen – that is what she is in my books, and that is how she is going to be, always.
And that also brings up today the most appropriate song of hers – to wish her a very happy birthday. The film is ‘Toofaan’ from 1969. The words are from the pen of Akhtar Romani. Music for this peppy and well paced dance number is created by Daan Singh. The singing voice – Asha Bhosle, probably the longest lasting partnership of singing voice and dancing steps on the Hindi screen.
Sharing the screen with Helen in this song is Dara Singh, whose birth anniversary just came two days ago (19th Nov). With this song we also remember him – he would have been 90 this year.
The dance is a typical folk dance from north India, performed in a very rural setting. Just see how wonderfully, this ordained Queen of the Cabaret – how wonderfully she is executing this oh so typically a rural folk dance.
And the words of the mukhda,
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
Dear Helen, always young, always fresh, always sixteen – always sweet sixteen – forever.

Song – Laaga Mohe Ab Ki Baar (Toofaan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Akhtar Romani, MD – Daan Singh
Lyrics
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
duniya pukaare solah baras ki
dekho chali re kataar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
nainon mein kajra
zulfon mein gajra
haathon mein mehndi racha ke
gaalon pe laali
pairon mein paayal
maathe pe bindiya sajaa ke
dekhoon jo darpan awaaz aaye..e..e..e
dekhoon jo darpan awaaz aaye
khil ye gayo re singaar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
logon ke darr se
mein apne ghar se
panghat mein ja na sakoon
panghat to kya
main apne hi angnaa
ghoonghat hataa na sakoon
ghoonghat jo sarke awaaz aaye..e..e..e
ghoonghat jo sarke awaaz aaye
hamri bhi kismat sanwaar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
duniya pukaare solah baras ki
dekho chali re kataar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal

After completing the recording, Mukesh had commented – people will remember you for this song. He was talking to the music director, and was expressing his emotions having just rendered a beautiful composition. The music director – Daan Singh. The song – “Wo Tere Pyaar Ka Gham” (from the film ‘My Love’ (1970)). Prophetic words, in some ways, yes, because this song is still on the list of favorites of the lovers of this music. But does everyone remember Daan Singh in connection with this song – I am not sure.
A composer with a huge talent, which was matched in his lifetime only by the immense neglect with which the industry has treated him. He had blessings from maestros like Khemchand Prakash and Anil Biswas, but the tinsel world in Bombay did not welcome him enough. The tracks from the unreleased film ‘Bhool Na Jaana’ (c 1965) should have been a sign for any discerning producer concerned with the quality of music in his films. But it was not to be so. Daan Singh spent a few frustrating years in Bombay, and then returned to Jaipur, and continued to work at the AIR Jaipur station.
A career that talks of just maybe five films. ‘Bhool Na Jaana’, mid sixties, unreleased; ‘Toofaan’, 1969, a Dara Singh action film; ‘My Love’, 1970, a romantic story with big name stars – Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore – did not succeed at box office; ‘Bawandar’, 2000, in the final edit, all songs went off screen, and the music remained just on the album; ‘Bhobar’, 2011, Rajasthani film, one song.
And then, on June 18, 2011 itself, he passed away after a brief illness – unsung, un-acknowledged. A sad conclusion, especially when one has heard his creations. Seven years have passed – we honor and remember him on this day.
Today’s song is from the 1969 film ‘Toofaan’. Although an action/adventure film for the B-grade circuit, the music of this film simply great. Here is a soft romantic number sung by Asha Bhosle. The lyrics are written by Akhtar Romani. On screen, the song is performed by actress Anita, who is attempting to entice and seduce Dara Singh, probably in preparation for the arrival of other members of the gang.
Listen and enjoy.

Song – Husn Mein Bhi Hai Nasha (Toofaan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Akhtar Romani, MD – Daan Singh
Lyrics
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha
peene waale dekh pee ke
farq hai donon mein kya
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha
ye adaayen ye nazaare
ye lachak ye shokhiyaan
tujhko masti mein pukaare
koi tera meharbaan
aag ye tu ne lagaai
aag ye tu hi bujha
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha
aaj dil behke to behke
hosh ka mat naam le
aaj dil behke to behke
hosh ka mat naam le
do ghadi madhosh reh ke
bekhudi se kaam le
khud bhi pee aankhon se meri
aur mujhko bhi pila
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha
aaj har parda utha de
tujhko chaahat ki kasam
aaj har doori mita de
tujhko teri hi kasam
main bana doon husn tujhko
ishq tu mujhko bana
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha
peene waale dekh pee ke’
farq hai donon mein kya
husn mein bhi hai nasha
jaam mein bhi hai nasha

This day, 50 years ago, the nation woke up to some somber and dreadful headlines. The war on the Himalayan border had intensified, with fresh attacks by China, on the Indian border outposts, after a lull of about 3 weeks. A border dispute between the two countries had reached a flash point with China attacking India, in a planned and concentrated manner in the very early hours of 20th October, 1962. In what is termed as the Himalyan Blunder on the part of the political and military leadership of India, within a matter of 4 days, we had lost large tracts of territory on both the eastern sectors (NEFA, now known as Arunachal Pradesh) and the western sectors (Askai Chin). After gaining a very important strategic and psychological upper hand, China announced a unilateral cease fire and there was a lull in fighting for a period of three weeks.

I am writing again today to document another very important interaction; an interaction that has been a dream for me for many months now. I am in San Diego today, and the local time is 2.00 am. And I am writing this post from the residence of Shri Surjit Singh ji. I am sure friends on this blog would be familiar with his name, in context of Hindi films and film music. He is a diehard fan of this music, and has been playing a major role in raising awareness about it, collecting rare materials and making them available on the internet. His web site is at here , and I recommend friends and readers on this blog to visit this and find out more about him.

Continuing with the series of delightful but rare songs from Mukesh. This offering is a lovely heartfelt melody from an unreleased and obscure film from 1964, ‘Bhool Na Jaanaa’. The songs, that have thankfully not been lost, are a wonderful treat, and the credit goes to Daan Singh, who is the composer for this film. Practically all the songs of this film are gems of the first water, something that speaks to the unsung talent of this great musician from Jaipur. There are seven songs available from this unreleased film, three of which are already discussed on this blog, viz. “Mere Humnasheen Mere Humnawaan” sung by Geeta Dutt, “Gora Gora Mukhdaa Ye Tu Ne Kahaan Paayaa Hai” sung by Mukesh, and “Gham e Dil Kis Se Kahoon” also by Mukesh. The earlier posts include brief write ups about the circumstances of this film, and how it got shelved. A film about the 1962 war with China, it got entangled with the changed government policy in 1964-65 to not depict anything negative about China. And Daan Singh, a very talented musician, was branded unlucky with his very first venture itself.

Mere humnasheen mere humnawaan

The film Bhool Na Jaanaa, is an unreleased film from the 1964-65 time frame. Started under the banner of Integrity International, by producer Jagan Prasad Sharma, its storyline was built around the Indo-China war of 1962. By the time this film was under production, the govt. of India refused permission for this film to be released. Apparently the relations with China were improving, and the govt. put a ban on films on this subject. (May be it was lucky for Chetan Anand that his film on the same subject, Haqeeqat, got released in 1964, and the ban probably came after that). Although in an advanced stage of completion, the production of this film was shelved.
