One aspect of the unexpected interludes on the Hindi film screen are the occasions when one gets to see songs performed on screen by the most unexpected actors. One does always expect the lead pair or pairs and occasionally the side heroes and side heroines to be performing songs of all types on screen. Of course the main comedy players are almost always expected to be performing songs of all types on screen. If you see the name Mehmood or Johnny Walker or IS Johar or even Jagdeep in the credits, one can be almost certain the film will have some song by them. This has been true for these actors, even during their senior years – one can see Johnny Walker in ‘Shaan’ (1980) joining the group song “Yamma Yammaa. . . Ye Khoobsurat Samaa”.

“Black Shadow” (1961) and “Chhatrapati Shivaji” (1961) were alphabetically the next two movies from 1961 that were so far missing from the blog. And these two movies appear just as elusive as “Aflatoon” (1961) that we discussed a couple of days ago.

“Bhagwan Balaji” (1961) was a Padmashree Pictures, Madras production. It was directed by P. Polayya, B A. The movie had N. T. Rama Rao, Savitri, S. Varalakshmi, Shantha Kumari, S. Balsaraswati, P. Suribabu, Ramana Reddy, B. Nagayya, Mohna etc in it. It appaers that the movie was a dubbed version of an original Telugu movie and Hindi songs were included in the movie which is akin to dubbing the original songs in Hindi. 🙂

I am quite fond of using phrases like “musical bandwagon”, “online collaboration”, “likeminded music lovers”, “labour of love” etc while discussing our activities in this blog. If we take a pause and reflect on what we are doing in this blog, we will realise that the kind of exchange of ideas, information, knowledge, wisdom, and pooling of resources that continuously takes place is simply mindboggling. It is not a case of I taking the lyrics of a song sent by a contributor and posting it just like that. Considerable background work is often involved in posting articles. In some cases, the background story behind the writing of the article itself makes for interesting reading.
