I am very honored indeed to have been asked by Atul to write about this song from the film “Gumnaam.” It is song number 2800 on this blog and I think he has chosen well in representing such a big number (although I am amazed that it’s not been put up here earlier!).

This movie is called “Tarzan and King Kong” (1965). The title and its star cast leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind that it is a C category movie. It has Dara Singh, Randhawa (Dara Singh’s brother), Mumtaz, Shyam Kumar etc.

“Shaheed” (1965) was a movie based on Bhagat Singh’s life and most songs were patriotic songs. Even other songs of this movie evoke patriotic fervour, such is the feeling that this movie brings about in its listeners.

“Guide” (1965) is a landmark movie in more ways than one.Its music was ethereal, and the industry insiders (singers, lyricists, music directors etc) voted this movie as musically the best Hindi movie of all times. Listening to the songs of this movie, one can see why. The songs of this movie has cast a magical spell over its listeners right from the time they became available some 45 years ago, and that magic spell continues even today, even across generations.

And in Indian tradition, though a married woman is called “ardhaanigini” (significant half- let us say), but on the other hand, she is required to treat her husband as a superior being, her god, and her place is supposed to be at his feet.

The initial line of this song may make people think of the title song from “Geet” (1970) which has similar words, and indeed one will come across that song on google search with these lyrics, but the song under discussion is an entirely different song and this song was created five years earlier than “Geet” (1970).
