Ek cheez maangte hain

Early years of 1970s saw a trend ( short lived though) where we had some songs where the the lyrics were quite direct. I call such songs as “straight talk” songs, where there is no beating about the bush. I have already posted a few such “straight talk” songs, for example “dil machal raha hai” from “Khalifa”.

Wow ! This was a song that I liked very much those days, before I forgot all about it since the song stopped playing on radio and loudspeakers. And now I have listened to this song once again after some 35 years.

Gori gori gaaon ki gori re

“Ye Gulistaan hamara” was a Dev Anand movie that few people remember today. The movie itself sank without a trace.
Ironically, this movie had a better storyline than some of the rubbish Dev Anand movies that met with better fate at the box office. May be the movie deserved it because Dev Anand in any case would not bother much about authenticity of picturisation in his movies.

Jab tak rahe tan mein jiya

This is a song that was quite well known to me, but those days I never knew which movie this song was from. It was only recently that I came to know that this movie was called “Samadhi”.
In those days prior to VCR/ Video players, the only way to watch a movie was on the big screen. It mostly meant watching the movie on cinema halls. Some times though, some people/ clubs would sponsor movies that would be shown at night on open space for free.

Gum hai kisi ke pyaar mein

This movie “Rampur ka Laxman” is by and large forgotten by now. It had many newcomers in it, including Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Shatrughan Sinha etc.
Movie may have been forgotten by now, but its songs are not. Though the songs were supposed to be timepass songs, many of them became popular not only during their time, but stayed popular with the passage of time as well. It speaks for the quality of these songs and their creators that we still like to listen to these songs.

“Apna Desh” was a movie that appealed to majority of movie goers. It had almost every thing that the movie going janta wanted. In those days, movie going public were undergoing a change of taste. Movies where hero sang sad songs and got bashed by the villains were proving unpopular. People wanted the heroes of 1970s to be more assertive and active than just singing sad songs.

Rona kabhi nahin rona

It was one of those Rajesh Khanna movies that I watched when it was released in 1970s and thoughroughly enjoyed the movie. Those were the days when the era of Hero singing sad songs throughout the movie and getting bashed by the villain ( Pran, typically) was coming to an end. The new age hero of 1970s took it lying down only till the interval and then took to action in the second half. “Apna desh ” was one such movie.

I heard this song many a times when this song started playing on loudspeakers and radio in 1972, and then forgot all about it. Now, 35-36 years later, I rediscovered this song again. And only now I have come to know that this song was from Seeta and Geeta. all these days I thought that “Seeta aur Geeta” only had songs sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.

S D Burman would typically sing a song at the beginning of the movie that would become an immortal song. “Zindagi Zindagi” also had such an opening song sung by the maestro that became immortal.
“Zindagi Zindagi” went one better. Not only did the movie open with a S D Burman classic song, the movie ended likewise too. And the song that plays at the close of the movie is just as standout as the opening song.

I have mentioned it earlier that S D Burman tended to have one philosophical song in his movies at the start. Credits would appear on the screen accompanied by the voice of S D Burman singing a song that would set the tone for the movie. This was the case in “Guide”, as well as “Amar Prem”.
There was a movie released just after Amar Prem, which also had a song like this. Unlike the above mentioned movies, this movie “Zindagi Zindagi” was not successful. And I am very disappointed with this fact. I have heard laments that most Bollywood movies are hackneyed. But when some good off beat movies are produced, the audience do not have the maturity to appreciate them.
