Today’s song is from an almost 90 year old film, Manzil-1936.

For a long time, I was searching for a song from this film, but none were available. Finally, I wrote to Shri Syed Jafer Shah ji and enquired if he has any song of this film, other than those already posted here. Promptly, he sent me today’s song- no.7 as per HFGK list. HFGK showed the singer’s name as Harimati, but the song sent by Jafer Bhai was sung by K.C.Dey. I pointed out this to him. He sent me the photo of the record No. 6764, which was tallying with the no. in HFGK. The film name was correct and the singer’s name was K.C.Dey. Obviously the song was correct. It seems that Harimati sang it in the film, but the record was in the voice of K.C.Dey. Or the HFGK had made a mistake in the singer’s name. Whatever it is, the song was correct as per the record number and details on it. So, no problem. Then our friend Sadanand ji Kamath uploaded it for me. Thanks to Jafer Bhai and Kamath ji.

Today’s song is from a film which is almost 90 years old – Chhaaya-1936.

This was the first Marathi/Hindi bilingual film made by Huns Pictures, Bombay – a banner owned by master Vinayak along with 2 others. The other partners were Baburao Pendharkar (actor/director) and Pandurang Naik (ace Cinematographer). The film was directed by Master Vinayak. Music was by Dhamman Khan. The film story, dialogues were translated by Pt. Indra, who also acted in this film. He wrote all the 14 songs of the Hindi version.

This was the period of tragic films by Saigal. His famous film Devdas, based on a story by Sharat Babu, became famous and popular all over the Indian subcontinent. This led to a trend in other languages to make tragedy films, in which the Hero dies. In the original Bangla language film, P.C.Barua had acted as Devdas. K.L.Saigal acted in its Hindi and Tamil version, singing 2 songs in the Tamil version. Barua directed the Bangla, Hindi and Assamese versions.

Film Chhaya-1936 was also based on this pattern, where the hero dies. Initially it was thought that such tragic films would not succeed, but film Chhaya became a Hit film. It won accolades from the public and the critics equally. It won many awards too. The cast of the film was Vinayak, Leela Chitnis, Ratnaprabha, Baburao Pendharkar, Indira Wadkar, Pt, Indra, Anant Marathe etc.

Today’s song is from the film Maaya-1936.

The film was made by New Theatres, Calcutta, which was a leading filmmaking studio in India. The film was directed by P.C.Barua. The lyricist was Asghar Hussain Shor and the music directors were R.C.Boral and Pankaj Mullick. There were only 6 songs in this film, whereas the average number of songs in the period 1931 to 1940 was 9 songs/film. A total of 931 films were made in this decade, with an average of 9.3 films/yr. Total 8247 songs were in these films. Incidentally the lowest average of songs was 4.6 songs/film in the period 2011-2020 ( as per the statistics provided by Shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji in RMIM in January 2022.) I find that the number of songs in Hindi films made in Bengal were less compared to films made at other centres. This was apart from melody and popularity resting with Calcutta made films, on an All India Basis for the same period.

Today’s song is from a very old film of the first decade of the Talkie films – Village Girl aka Gram Kanya-1936.

There were 3 films with the same title. The first one was made as a Silent film, with Sulochana in the lead opposite Raja Sandow. The film was made by Imperial Film Company, Bombay and it was directed by Mohan Bhavnani. He later married actress Enakshi Rama Rau in 1931. The second film was in 1936, today’s film and the third was made in 1945 with singer and actress Nurjahan. It had excellent songs composed by Music Director Shyam Sunder. It was for this film that Mohd. Rafi recorded his first Hindi song in 1944. He sang in the Chorus and the lead singer was G.M.Durrani. However, when the times changed, Rafi was the lead singer and Durrani in the Chorus for a song in K.Asif’s film Laila Majnu !
