“Vidyapati” (1937) is one of the earliest Hindi talkies and it is one that was a landmark movie of its time. It was produced by Calcutta’s New Theatre. This movie starred Pahadi Sanyal, Prithviraj Kapoor, Kanan Devi, K C Dey, K N Singh, Kidar Sharma, Nemo, Chhaaya Devi, Leela Desai etc.

The innovator in Pankaj Babu has been responsible for some very remarkable additions to the sound and music aspect of the film industry. He was probably the first music arranger and orchestra conductor to introduce the use of western musical forms and instruments in the music for films in India. He is credited with introducing the use of instruments like piano and accordion, in the music compositions for Hindi and Bengali films that he worked on.

President (1937) is a social drama from New Theatres, Calcutta, produced by BN Sircar and directed by Nitin Bose. The story line is about the relationship between mill owners and workers. In a manner of speaking, this movie is probably the forerunner of other such movies that were made later on, e.g. Paighaam, Akaashdeep, Baharon Ke Sapne.

Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim “Zauq” is considered as a leading light amongst the Urdu poets across all ages in the subcontinent. Born in 1789, he was the son of a lowly placed soldier in the Mughal Army. He was educated in the ‘maktab’ (elementary religious school) under the tutelage of Hafiz Ghulam Rasool. Hafiz saab was a poet himself, and used to write ghazals under the pen name of ‘shauk’. Under this influence, Muhammad Ibrahim got addicted to poetry, and himself started to write under the pen name of ‘Zauq’.

“Wahaan” (1937) is a very old Hindi movie which few people know about today. Many legends of Hindi movies had acted in this movie. Names like Chandramohan, Shanta Apte, Leela Chitnis, Prahlad, Ulhas, Master Chhotu etc had figured in this movie.

Na koi prem ka rog lagaaye

When I was a kid, I disliked listening to old songs, especially the songs in Radio Ceylon’s “Puraani filmon ke geet” which was broadcast from 7-30 AM to 8-AM. I in fact found the singing style of these old songs quite funny. And I would find the singing of K L Saigal the funniest of them all.
