When I saw Naqli Nawab (1962) a few days ago, I got into the mood to watch Muslim socials. As it is, this is a genre I am fond of. If nothing else, the Urdu alone is good enough to keep me interested in the film. Everything else – a storyline, a qawwali or mushaira, lavish sets – is a bonus.

So I followed Naqli Nawab with Mehboob Khan’s Najma (1943) and B R Chopra’s Chandni Chowk (1954).

“Ishaara” (1943) is a movie produced more than seven decades ago. Little information was known about this movie till our own beloved inhouse Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh came to our help. In addition, we also had late Khwaja Sultan Ahmad (brother of music director Khursheed Anwar) as our visitor in the past who shared some unknown facts about the movies. Here are the details of this movie as narrated to us by the two abovementioned knowledgeable experts:

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 43
——————————————
NURSE (1943), also known as CHHOTI MAA, was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The star cast included Khursheed, Arun Ahuja, Prabha, Anil Kumar, Indira, Sheikh etc. From the title of the film, I thought that it was a heroine oriented film. But after reading the synopsis of the film given by Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh as comments in one of the songs of the film, it was clear that it was more of a family drama than the story on the life of a nurse. Let me recapitulate a gist of the story given by him in the Blog:

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 40
——————————————-
MOHABBAT KI JEET (1943) was produced under the banner of Girdhar Bahaar Productions and it was directed by Ramanlal Desai. The star cast included Nadia, Navinchandra, Leela Pawar, S Nazir, Shaqir, Agha, Munshi Kanzar, Vasantrao Pehlwan etc. From the star cast it can be safely assumed that the film belonged to the genre of stunt/action. I have no idea about the story of the film. But Nadia being the heroine in the film, one can expect that the story of the film would revolve around her role of striking out the forces of evil and restore goodness to the society. She would generally attain this by doing spectacular stunts and acrobatics which would please the front benchers in the theatres.

The counter has been stuck at double one triple nine, for three days now. That, I am sure, will have beaten all the records in the books.
