It is a well-known fact that when sound films came into being in 1931, majority of the films which were produced, especially in the 1930s, belonged to the genres of action, adventure, costume drama, mythology, fantasy, folk legend etc. There were few takers for films containing social, family drama and romantic themes. In a way, this was the legacy from silent films. Those who produced and directed silent films may have thought it prudent to try more or less the same genres in sound films to begin with.

“Holiday in Bombay”(1941) was directed by S Badami for Sudama Productions, Bombay. This forgotten movie had Sabita Devi, Shobhana Samarth, arun, Vatsala Kumthekar, E Bilimoria, Jaal Merchant, Ghory etc in it.

“Aabroo”(1943) was directed by Nazeer for Hind Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Sitara Devi, Yakoob, Nazeer, Jagdish, Masood, Shakir, Vatsala Kumthekar, Laddan, Chanda Bai, Janardan Sharma etc in it.

“Ishaara” (1943) is a movie produced more than seven decades ago. Little information was known about this movie till our own beloved inhouse Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh came to our help. In addition, we also had late Khwaja Sultan Ahmad (brother of music director Khursheed Anwar) as our visitor in the past who shared some unknown facts about the movies. The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 8

An absolute gem.  A duet song from 1938 about which almost no information is available.  Just that the film is ‘Baanke Saanwariya’ and the name of the music director is  Damodar Sharma.  I even checked the actual 78 rpm record of this song, which is available with my friend.  Even the names of the singers is not mentioned.
