When I saw Naqli Nawab (1962) a few days ago, I got into the mood to watch Muslim socials. As it is, this is a genre I am fond of. If nothing else, the Urdu alone is good enough to keep me interested in the film. Everything else – a storyline, a qawwali or mushaira, lavish sets – is a bonus.

So I followed Naqli Nawab with Mehboob Khan’s Najma (1943) and B R Chopra’s Chandni Chowk (1954).

I liked both films, enjoying the Urdu. I must admit my knowledge of Urdu is pretty ordinary. But neither of these films had Urdu that was particularly difficult to understand. They were probably written keeping masses in mind. Besides, if I didn’t understand a word as such, I understood it in context, so there was no problem.

I found Najma (1943) particularly enjoyable because I was dreading that it would be a slow tearjerker of a film. I need not have worried. It is a Mehboob Khan film, and that alone should have reassured me.

Mehboob Khan is a director who I have extremely high regard for. Not only were his films progressive and having a social message, they were also usually very well made, and eminently watchable.

For anyone interested in knowing more about Mehboob Khan on this blog, Arunji has written more about it in a post on another Najma song.

The first Mehboob Khan film that I happened to see was Roti (1942). I saw it sometime only in 2008 or 2009. I fell totally in love with it. After that I have watched a few of his films (Elaan, Andaaz, Aan, Amar) and I have liked them all. Amar dragged on a bit in the second half but I can allow that, seeing as how the story was developing. I plan on watching more Mehboob Khan films.

Anyway, even with Najma, Mehboob Khan certainly didn’t disappoint. The characters are very well etched out, the story moves at a good pace – and the songs are good too.

Of the 12 songs in the film, 6 have already been posted. Here then is the seventh song to be posted on this blog.

The song is picturised on a happy Sitara Devi and a worried-looking Ashok Kumar, with Sitara Devi herself the singer.

The situation is this. Ashok Kumar is a doctor who is married to Sitara Devi. He was once in love with Veena, who happened to be his father’s close friend’s daughter. She is also now married, so although he feels morose when he thinks about his past love, there is really nothing going on anymore between the two of them anymore. Sitara Devi, however, is very jealous of their past love and is suspicious that there is still something left of it.

Veena is now very ill and all doctors have given up on her. As a last option, her father contacts Ashok Kumar and requests him to help. Ashok Kumar checks her condition, and returns home to read up on the case. He is worried because time is of the essence.

Sitara Devi on the other hand, is thrilled on hearing the news. Her main obstacle is close to being out of the way. She is ecstatic and bursts into song.

That is this song.

I must say I like Sitara Devi. She had a vibrant, assertive personality. I liked her a lot in Roti – and here too, though she has a somewhat negative role, she still portrays it with verve.

And Ashok Kumar is somebody I’ve always liked. I can see an old film for him alone. This is my third Ashok Kumar film from the 1930s-40s (after Achhut Kanya (1936) and Kismet (1944)), and I intend to see more.

Anyway, please listen to this short song in Sitara Devi’s lively voice. It is written by Anjum Pilbhiti and composed by Rafiq Ghaznavi.

Song-Gaaoon khushi mein gaaoon (Najma)(1943) Singer-Sitaara Devi, Lyrics-Anjum Pilibhiti, MD-Rafiq Ghaznavi

Gaaoon
Gaaoon khushi mein gaaoon

Har gham ko mitaaoon oon
Har gham ko mitaoon oon
Roton ko hansaoon oon
Wo mujh ko bulaayen

Kuchh

Gaaoon khushi mein gaaoon
aa ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha
Gaaoon khushi mein gaoon
aa ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha
Gaaoon

Duniya ki kahaani
Sun meri zubaani
Duniya ki kahaani
Sun meri zubaani
Gham dil ka budhaapa
Gham dil ka budhaapa
Aur khushiyaan jawaani
Aur khushiyaan jawaani
Phir kyon na main gaaoon
Phir kyon na main gaaoon
Gaaoon
Gaaoon khushi mein gaaoon
aa ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha
Gaaoon
Gaaoon khushi mein gaaoon
aa ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha
