Nightingale Noorjehaan – 2

I am trying to complete Noorjehan’s songs on this blog. The current film I am dealing with is ‘Hamjoli’.   Since I have all her songs in MP3 form, I was searching readymade clips on internet – specially YouTube. Almost all the songs of ‘Hamjoli’ I found there and most of them are uploaded there by Vidur Suri. I had seen that name in comments of our blog and I contacted him, thinking that he might be a person if not in my age group but a person above 50 or 60. Imagine my shocking (but pleasant) surprise, when I came to know that he is a lad of just 17 years! I salute him for taking interest in rare songs of half a century old films. Most of the ‘ Hamjoli’ songs that I propose to include on this blog are available online courtsey of Vidur Suri.

After a long long time I am trying to plunge again in Atul’s wonderful Blog. This presentation, is my sixtieth contribution.

I am going to track Noorjehan songs from the latest to the earliest and will try to complete, as far as possible, her wonderful contributions to Hindi Film Music. Her films of 1947 in our motherland, before she left for Pakistan were ‘Jugnu’ and ‘Mirza Sahiba’. All songs with her voice in these films are covered in this Blog. So I come to the year 1946. There were three films viz, ‘Hamjoli’, ‘Dil’ and ‘Anmol Ghadi’. Today I will start with ‘Hamjoli’.

“Ham Ek Hain” (1946) was a Prabhat Film Company Limited Production. It was directed by P L Santoshi.

This movie was the debut movie of Dev Anand, Rehman, Rane, Rehana and Kamla Kotnis. Today this movie is known for Dev Anand, but he had only played a smaller role. The biggest name of this movie at that time was Durga Khote, who played the matriarch who, in addition to her own son (played by Dev Anand) adopts boys of different religions as well as a girl of the lower caste and brings them up as her own kids. It is easy to guess that this movie was the inspiration behind lots of subsequent movies espousing the theme of unity in diversity. The name of “Amar Akbar anthony” (1977) readily comes to mind.

“Ham Ek Hain” (1946), a Prabhat Film Company Limited production, was a movie with a message. in this movie, Durga Khote, a noble widowed matriarch brings up many orphan kids in addition to her own son. These kids are her own son Shankar (Dev Anand), and orphans Yusuf (Rehman), John (Rane) and Durga (Rehana). As can be seen, she is raising three boys of three different religions as her own, plus one girl of low caste , thus sending a strong message of “Ham ek Hain” (We are one).

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 3
——————————————-

Today’s song is from film Namumkin-46. It is a duet of Shamshad Begum and K.S.Ragi.

We are accustomed to see only the usual regular well known names, but when some new or unknown name appears, our brows are raised and we wonder who this singer is. Same thoughts came to my mind when I first came across his name few years back. One would immediately think of the singers in a Gurudwara, who are also called Raagis. I tried and tried very hard, but except that he hailed from Andhra pradesh, I could not get any other information on him. Then one fine morning K S Ragi’s daughter appeared on RMIM forum and gave some more information. Though even this was very meagre, still at least something was there.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 6
—————————————————–

Aha, a very fragrant addition to this series.  We now have a song that is sung by the seller of ‘itra’, or ‘attar’ or Indian fragrant oils.

The word ‘attar’ ‘itr’ brings to mind the sensations of exotic perfumes, that is a world and a vocabulary all by itself.  It also brings with itself, the long list of glamorous and mysterious names such as Zaafraan, Shamaama, Majmuha, Motia, Raajgir, Chameli, Chandan (or Sandal), Firdaus, Nargis, Mushq-Amber, Gulab, Kesar (Saffron), Khas, Kasturi and many more.  These fragrant oils from India, are prepared from natural plant sources viz. flower petals, leaves, wood and plant resins.  (Except for ‘Kasturi’ (Musk), which is derived from animal origin viz. the musk deers.  Pure and authentic ‘Kasturi’ is a very rare thing to locate these days.  A sure test of its authenticity is that if you bring just a few grains of pure Kasturi near your nostrils, you will have a nosebleed, such is the power of this aroma.)

I had mentioned in my last post that I was journeying by train and I hoped to arrive at my destination in time to watch the world cup match between BCCI (Team India for the uninitiated and the gullible) and South Africa on TV.
