“Shabistaan” (1951) was an Arabian Nights kind of fantasy movie. Such kind of movie were then regarded as B grade movie. “Stunt” movie was another name for such movies because these movies had lots of fights in them. In fact, Shyam, the hero of this movie, died on the stage of this movie while performing a stunt. He was riding a horse when he fell from the horse and died. To this date, this is regarded as one of the major disasters on the sets of Hindi movies.

Get together songs, accompanied by piano were introduced in Hindi movies in late 1940s. Such songs became standard fare in Hindi movies and remained so for the next three decades or so.

“Albela”(1951) was the biggest hit of Bhagwan’s career. It was the first time he made an A grade movie and reaped rich dividends. It is another matter that he could not capitalise on this success and soon he was back to making B grade movies again, in addition to acting as a comedian.

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Sainyyan” (1951) and I thought I had discussed them all. But now I find, much to my pleasant surprise, that there are more songs in this movie. In fact, I have covered only half the songs of this movie, as this movie has ten songs in it. Ten Sajjad Hussain compositions in one movi ! It means that the working conditions during the making of this movie met with Sajjad Hussain’s approval and he did not feel the need to walk out of this movie in a huff unlike quite a few other movies of those days. And the songs that he composed are such delightful songs.

Playful romantic songs, especially those that are picturised on a pair of actors who were actually romantically involved always makes for good listen/watch. Dev Anand and Suraiyya were one of the first such on screen couple.
