The movie had Sumitra Devi, Shammi Kapoor, Chitra, Kammo, Amar, Wazir Mohammad Khan, Shameem, Ram Avtar, Cuckoo, S M Abbas, Parasram, Munshi Munaqqa, Jagdish Kanwal, Sheetal, Om Prakash etc with Wasti, Randhir and Shashikala as guest artists.

Today’s song is from the film Mast Qalandar-55. It is sung by Shamshad Begum, Rafi and Master Sonik alongwith chorus. The mukhada of the song ” Mast qalandar dama dam” is quite a misleading one, as it has nothing to do with famous Punjabi/Sindhi qawali Dama dam mast qalandar. The phrase has been used here to describe a carefree man. This seems to be a street dance, sung to entertain the onlookers.

As the name suggests, this is a costume drama that is directed by Balwant Bhatt for the banner of Deepak Pictures, Bombay. The star casting pairs Nirupa Roy opposite to Ranjan, as the lead pair. Others in the star cast include Ishwar Lal, Ranjeet Kumari, BM Vyas, Nagpal, Kesri, Shyam Sunder, Master Bachcha, Azeem, Neera, Henna, Asha Mathur etc.

Readers from Gujarat must have heard the name of Shri Rajanikumar Pandya ji, a famous writer and winner of five awards from Sahitya Academy of Gujarat. One of the several books he has written on film people is “Aap ki Parchhaainyaan “.( He had gifted me this book). This book contains information derived from his personal interactions with several film greats like Nargis, Talat, Shamshad, Mubarak Begum, Jaikishen, Mukesh, Rafi, Composers Kalyan ji – Anand ji, Naushad, Anil Biswas, Hemant Kumar, Kavi Pradeep and a few more. In this book he has devoted 30 pages for his personal experiences with Jagmohan Sursagar ( Jaganmoy Mitra ). This is about the period close to two years when Jagmohan first stayed in his house and later elsewhere in Ahmmedabad. Jagmohan had already retired by that time and he was a devastated person due to the demise of his mother and wife in a span of a few months.

Today’s song is a delightful melody- a Lata solo from film Duiya Gol Hai-55. This song was quite a popular song in those days. I am surprised ( and happy too) that this Lata song has remained to be discussed here so long. Perhaps its Mukhada, as written in HFGK , is rather misleading-“Daalo karodon pe babuji khaak….”as it does not give any inkling about its melody or popularity. This film was produced and directed ( Debut) by Omprakash, the comedian.
