In this article, I will explore the song, ‘imtihaan ham pyaar ka de ke, raah dekhe kya hai nateeja’ from ‘Dil Hi Dil Mein’ (2000) which was remade in Hindi from the 1999 released Tamil film, ‘Kadhalan Dhinam’ (Valentine’s Day). The Hindi film was partly dubbed and partly reshot as two of the supporting actors – Anupam Kher and Johny Lever were not the part of the original Tamil film. The lead actors in both the versions were Sonali Bendre and Kunal Singh who debuted as the lead actor in both these films. I had heard the song under discussion long time back without knowing the name of the film. In fact, I was not aware of either of these films until recently.

The story and the review of the film which I read online did not push me to watch the film. It is beyond my imagination that Johny Lever acted in the film as a professor in the business management school and helped his student to write love letters. However, love affair of hero and heroine through internet was probably an innovative idea in 1999. I watched video clips of almost all the songs and selected a song for discussion as mentioned above which, in my view, was the best song from the film. I have also watched the original Tamil song, kaadhal ennum thervezhuthi penned by Tamil poet and lyricist, Valli (real name: T S Rangarajan). The song was picturised in around Sydney.

The love song under discussion which will be the first song from the film to appear on the Blog, was written by P K Mishra. While S P Balasubrahmanyam sang for Kunal Singh in Tamil version, Srinivas sang for him in Hindi version. Swarnalatha sang for Sonali Bendre in both the versions. It is said that this song is one of the favourites of A R Rahman and he includes this song during his concerts in India and abroad. This song (both Tamil and Hindi) is also remembered for two of the artists associated with this song – Kunal Singh and Swarnalatha – who passed away in their young age.

Kunal Singh (29/09/1976 – 07/02/2008) committed suicide in Mumbai when he was 32. At that time, he had shifted to Mumbai and turned producer with his under-production film, ‘Yogi’. It was speculated that he was depressed as his acting career did not take-off after the initial success of his 3 Tamil films. Subsequently, his 4 films failed at the box office in a row and about half-a-dozen Tamil films were either shelved or did not get released.

Kerala born Swarnalatha (29/04/1973 – 12/09/2010) had a phenomenal rise in her career as a playback singer. During her active years 1987-2006, she is said to have recorded over 1000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, and Urdu with her immaculate pronunciation in each of these languages. At the peak of her playback singing career, she suffered from a rare lung disease for which there was no cure. After spending about 3 years in anonymity, Swarnalatha succumbed to lung disease on 12/09/2010 at the young age of 37. [Swarnalatha’s detailed biography is here ].

Coming back on the song under discussion, the singing voices of Srinivas and Swarnalatha sound fresh and pleasing to the ears. There is a magical exuberance in Swarnalatha’s voice when she sings ‘dola dola dola dola, man dola dola dola’ and in her humming at the end of the song in the audio clip. Both her renditions are mesmerising.

The melodical treatment of the song points to 1950s style. The prominent use of Flute in the prelude and Mandolin in the first interlude also give that impression. However, the rhythm is foot tapping throughout the song. The rhythmic patterns in this song remind me of the song, ‘achchi lagti ho’ from ‘Kuchh Na Kaho’ (2003) which have, more or less, similar rhythm though musical instruments may be different in use. The song ends with postlude of mukhda tune majorly played on violins, flute, mandolin and on the double bass. In audio clip, the song ends with humming by Swarnalatha of the mukhda tune.

A R Rahman has done the fusion again, this time between 50’s melody and 90s rhythm.

AR Rehman – The Musician of 21st Century – 4

If I say that the above lines perfectly describe the colourful sights and smells of Kashmir, then it is much less than what I want to say. The first time I travelled outside Maharashtra, north of Mumbai, was the trip to Kashmir combined with Delhi-Agra visit back in 2012. So, after 10 years I just thought, let’s do a package tour this time. There we were, 6 of us in the group, a couple from Bangalore, two senior ladies from Gujarat and my husband with his better half 😊. We two reached a day earlier then the group tour was to start, in the 3rd week of August. This was right after the engagement ceremony in Belgaum. So, we got to stay in two different houseboats and we covered Yusmarg, another beautiful part of the valley, a little off the beaten track. Apart from Srinagar, this was the only place I got to see a crowd of local people. There were some school groups, who were visiting that day. Lots of girls and boys in school uniforms with teachers.

About houseboat stay: Exquisitely carved wooden boat, living in them is a different and unique experience. They are stationary, and all of them have the same type of facilities and services are very basic. Meals are provided in house, by the household of the owners living behind the houseboats, in the houses on the island in the Dal lake. There are many ghats for travelling to and fro from house boats. And you cannot travel from one house boats covered by one ghat, to another houseboat coming under the jurisdiction of another ghat. The shikaras cannot trespass into each other’s territories, in other words. They will drop you to their own ghat, then you can make your own way to which ever ghat your other houseboat comes under and take a fresh shikara from there. In order to find a Kashmir song, I saw a few songs of ‘Mission Kashmir”. In them, the interiors of the houseboat shown are very authentic and close to the real thing. But most of the scenes in that song showing area surrounding the houseboat is shot in studio, and not realistic at all.

Next place to travel was Pahalgham, where we stayed to 2 nights. The hightlight is travelling to Pahalgham by road. The whole area and travel, is a scenic beauty. I was clicking away on my mobile and it was never enough. Another turn of the road, and there is more to see, the same mountains and trees but different to click. This time I can say, I really looked at Kashmir through the camera on my mobile. It also makes me wonder how this type of natural beautiful views must be affecting the professional photographers. I am sure the film industry photographers have shot reels and reels of the views here, and most of it could not be included in the final edited film. Pahalgham has not changed much from 2012. It is a town high up in the mountainous valley, surrounded by huge mountains. They have developed the Betaab valley as a big picnic spot, and entry fee. It has artificially created pebble beach, with patches of forests, pathways and open gardens. The ‘Lidder’ river is really magnificent to travel along, with deep gorges and water dancing along huge boulders. River rafting could be delighting for those who can.

Next stop was at Gulmarg, which has changed, more commercial, more horses and horsemen then tourist. The situation is the same at Yusmarg, as there were very few tourists there. But at Gulmarg, tourists were there, but the whole area seems to be swarming with horses and guides. On our last visit, we could not get the tickets for Gondola ride. This time the tour operator has arranged tickets, so I was excited to go so high up in the mountains. But the tour company messed up our booking, and they had booked it for the next day. Next day, we were to leave for Srinagar. All the group members called up the tour operators contacts, but it was a Sunday, the office was closed. Eventually, the issue was resolved, and the tickets were arranged. So, we went up level 1 on the gondola, and 4 of us went to the next level i. e. Level 2 also, and we climbed down a side of the mountain to get to the last remaining patch of ice. That patch had not melted as direct sun light is not falling on that side of the mountain. In August, there is no snow/ice anywhere in Kashmir, except the glaciers, which are obviously too far to reach.

We returned to Srinagar, and next day was for sight seeing at Srinagar and shopping. Shankar Acharya temple visit, and Gardens were scheduled, but Nishat Baug was closed that day, so we could only visit Shalimar Garden and click the photos there.

Next day was the day trip to Sonmarg, which is on the road to Laddakh. This is again an enchanting journey through the valleys. With the huge mountains, (we don’t have such mountains in our region) make us wonder at the creator. The Himalayas are the highest mountain range in the world, with top two peaks in this range, the Mount Everest and K-II. I was just writing this on guess work, but thought to research the top ten peaks in the world. This is the result:

The Himalayas account for all ten of them. I should have looked for top 20, then maybe I will get some variety. No such luck as the top 20 also all in the Himalayas. (Highest mountains), only the last few out of the 8 thousanders’(in meters) list.

On my last trip, we were unable to tolerate the cold, and returned to Srinagar halfway from Sonamarg. This time since the weather was tolerably cold, we did reach the area where the Glacier is visible. People go near the streams and nearer to the Glacier, on horseback. We travelled a little distance up the mountain on horse but came back early. The couple from Bangalore went the whole hog and made the most of the trip, as they did the horse-riding expedition in Pahalgham too.

I have found another Bollywood song, part of which is shot near to the Thajiwas glacier. I will post that outdoorsy song and then we can see how huge it was then and compare it to the present status in the you tube links given above. There is the chance to write more about the glaciers and rivers and mountains of Kashmir.

My search of songs filmed in Kashmir took me to the movie “Jab tak hai Jaan”(2012), songs of which were composed by A. R. Rehman. There are other songs in the movie that are very rich and appealing. Punjabi folk and sufiana are accounting for 80% of creativity in hindi film music even in the 21st century. But this song won out on location shoots.

So this catchy songs, filmed part in Gulmarg, Part in Pehalgham, part in Yusmarg and the fabulous reflective Dal lake, sung by Neeti Mohan and written by Gulzar is post no. 4 of A. R. Rehman series. River rafting in Lidder river and the road towards Pehelgham are the locations, no one could avoid if you got a film unit to shoot in Kashmir. Anushka Sharma is singing, and Shah Rukh Khan is also seen in the song. The audio recording of the song focuses on Neeti Mohan’s powerful vocals. There are as many different singers as songs in this score.

A R Rahman started his filmy career as an independent music director with ‘Roja’ (1992) in Tamil which became a super hit film with its music playing an important role for the film’s popularity. About a year later, Hindi dubbed version of ‘Roja’ was released which also became a hit. I observe from the filmography of A R Rahman that 3 Tamil/Malayalam films out of his first 4 films were dubbed in Hindi and released. This may be a sort of record for A R Rahman at the beginning of his career as a music director among the music directors of South Indian films in the similar situation. Subsequently, some more Tamil films for which A R Rahman was the music director were dubbed in Hindi. One of the very successful films was ‘Kadhalan’ (1994) [English meaning: Loverboy] which was dubbed in Hindi with the title ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995). The Hindi dubbed version of the film got Censor Certificate on May 31, 1995. The film was produced by K T Kunjumon and directed by S Shankar. Prabhu Deva and Nagma were in the lead role supported by S P Balasubrahmanyam, Girish Karnad, Vadivelu, Raghuvaran etc.

In an interview published in E-Times of India dated September 17, 2019, on the occasion of the completion of 25 years of the release of the film, K T Kunjumon, the producer of the film revealed that he and S Shankar, the director decided to work on the box office tested love story of a middle-class boy with a girl of an affluent and influential family. To develop the story further, Kunjumon gave an idea of fictionalization of the cold war then going on between the Chief Minister Jayalalitha and the Governor Dr Channa Reddy. Since Kunjumon was himself a functionary of AIADMK in Kerala, the Governor was made the villain in the film’s story.

In this film, all the ingredients for the box office success such as romance, dances, songs, villain, fights etc were included. The only worry for the producer and the director was the audience’s reactions to Prabhu Deva as a lead actor. In all his earlier films, Prabhu Deva had worked as a dancer and at most in a cameo role in the song sequence. To overcome the likely adverse reactions to Prabhu Deva as the lead actor, the producer and the director decided to make the film appealing to the audience, by making use of visual effects and animations in the songs.

‘Kadhalan’ (1994) became a super hit film which was beyond the expectations of the film makers as well as of the trade circles. The film’s songs became very popular. The film got five National Awards – four in the technical categories and one to debut playback singer, P Unnikrishnan, who sang Ennavale adi ennavale in Tamil. With more than expected success of the film on the box office front, the producer decided to dub the film in Hindi with the title. ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995) for wider audience. Even Hindi version of the film became a box office hit.

The story of ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995) which I have come to know only recently, did not motivate me to watch the film. To me, it was a wild imagination to show a constitutional head of a State as the initiator of the terrorist activities in his State to prove the breakdown of law and order situation thus facilitating the dismissal of the state government. The 9 songs of the film are musical treats, and I am happy restricting myself to watching the video clips of the songs. I will not miss the visual effects shown in the film as they are mainly used in the song picturization. All the songs have been written by P K Mishra. One song from the film has been represented on the Blog.

The two most popular songs of the film, if I go by the number of times, they were shown on the TV music channels in the year 1995 were ‘muqabala muqabala’ and ‘urvasi urvasi’. The immense popularity of these two songs seems to have sidelined in the popularity chart, my favourite song from the film, ‘sun ri sakhi meri pyaari sakhi’ which I am discussing here. The song is rendered by Hariharan. I have also enjoyed listening to the song’s Tamil equivalent, Ennavale adi ennavale rendered by debutant playback singer, P Unnikrishnan.

This song has everything. The beautiful lyrics by P K Mishra, the pleasing to the ear melody, the novelty in the orchestration, the soulful rendition by Hariharan and nicely picturised on Prabhu Deva and Nagma with visual effects in a picturesque location gives a feel of sublime love song. For P K Mishra, it is not an easy work of transliteration of Tamil song into Hindi as he has to find the appropriate Hindi words to match the lip syncing of Tamil words on actors in the song picturisation. So, in some lines, P K Mishra has used words in Hindi which is not the exact translation but broadly in line with the mood of the song.

I often get a feel of spirituality in A R Rahman’s musical compositions in which the semi-classical melody is blended with soulful orchestrations. For example, the violin played between 1:58 – 2:18 and the flute (probably played by Naveen Kumar) between 3:30 – 3:48 of the song provide the synergy of soul and exuberant. Another feature of the song is that Hariharan sings in a higher octave (pitch) some lines in the song to emphasise the genuineness of love. The wordings of the song also give me a feel of the Radha-Krishna song. This is more pronounced when I listen to the audio clip.

The song has a classical Carnatic touch. A couple of comments on ‘ennavale adi ennavale’ suggest that the song is based on Carnatic raag Neelambari. A further search on Youtube reveals that this raag is mainly used for singing lullaby. Truely, listening to this song makes me to close eyes with mind relaxed. I have listened to this song as well as its Tamil version many times during the last few days and my interest in the song has not diminished.

Govind Nihalani joined Hindi film industry as a Cinematographer in 1974. In the initial period, he mainly worked with Shyam Benegal as a Cinematographer, both for his documentary and feature films. In 1980, he turned director and directed some socially relevant films such as ‘Aakrosh’ (1980), Vijeta (1982), ‘Ardha Satya’ (1983), ‘Aghaat’ (1985), ‘Drishti’ (1990), ‘Drohkaal’ (1994), ‘Hazaar Chauraasi Ki Maa’ (1998). Almost all his films, both as a Cinematographer and the Director were critically acclaimed.

With ‘Thakshak’ (1999), Govind Nihalani made his first attempt (and probably the last) in producing and directing a commercial genre of Hindi film, also called ‘the mainstream Bollywood’ film. In his interview held sometime in December 1999 which was published on the ‘Rediff On The Net’, Govind Nihalani revealed that Ajay Devgan was keen to work with him and he had a script ready to fit the role for him. Manmohan Shetty, who had produced some of Govind Nihalani offbeat films, was requesting him to make a film for the wider audience also. The eagerness of Ajay Devgan to work with him, getting Manmohan Shetty to finance the film and an opportunity to experiment with a different genre of film, prompted him to make ‘Thakshak’ (1999). Ajay Devgan and Tabu were the lead pair with Amrish Puri, Rahul Bose, Govind Namdev, Nethra Raghuraman, A K Hangal, Ravi Patwardhan, Uttara Baokar etc. in supporting roles.

As revealed by Govind Nihalani in a separate interview, producing and directing a commercial film was a new experience for him. His earlier films were made with a small budget, and he did not have the pressure of box office success. Hence, he made his earlier films without interference from any quarters. While making ‘Thakshak’, though he did not have any problem with his main actors, there were pressures from the distributors to make some changes in the script of the film with their own suggestions when they were shown the rushes of the film. That the film took 2 years to complete (as against his earlier films which he completed in less than one year) would indicate that he had to compromise on his script which Govind Nihalani had originally written.

I had not watched the film when it was released. In fact, I did not have any idea about the story of the film. The only thing I knew about the film at that time was a dance song picturised on Tabu which I liked and therefore had watched the song on TV music channels a few times. Sometime back, that dance song came back to my mind and I refreshed my memory by watching the video clip of the song. I liked the song so much that I marked in my mind to write an article on this song for the Blog. Subsequently, I also watched the film on You Tube.

‘Thakshak’ (1999) is a romantic crime thriller. The story of the film was in keeping with the socio-political situations in the country, particularly in Mumbai of Builders-Underworlds-politicians nexus. Ishaan (Ajay Devgan), is the son of Nahar Singh (Amrish Puri), the partner in the real estate business of Jodha Bhai (Ravi Patwardhan) who in reality is a gangster. Sunny (Rahul Bose), the grandson of Jodha Bhai and Ishaan are great friends. But their temperament is quite different. Sunny believes that the power flows from the barrel of a gun. Ishaan reminds him that that the one who thrives on the power of gun can also get killed by the same gun. The subtle temperament of Ishaan is further soften when he meets his lady love Suman (Tabu). The influence of Suman on Ishaan turns him to shed the violent life of the underworld to the decent life of a common man. But Ishaan is in dilemma as his oath of allegiance to Sunny to remain with him as his partner in crime and his conscious telling him to follow the life like a common man like his idealistic romantic partner, Suman. A further complications in these relationship – Ishaan and Sunny and Ishaan and Suman develops when Suman is the witness to the crime committed by Sunny in killing the owner of an old house to grab the plot where Ishaan is the partner in the crime. How the emerging situations themselves force Ishaan to come out of his moral obligations toward Sunny and follow the path of humanity is the finale of the film.

Now my 2 cents on the film. The story of a criminal trying to live a decent life like a common man has been tried in Hindi films many time. But in ‘Thakshak’, Govind Nihalani has given somewhat different treatment in that he has projected Ishaan caught in a moral dilemma of protecting his gangster friend, Sunny against whom his lady love, Suman has testified. The emotional upheaval Ishaan goes through has been well presented. All the three main actors – Ajay Devgan, Tabu and Rahul Bose have performed very well. However, the momentum of the story slows down due to 8 songs in the film most of which do not fit into the story of the film. Also, in my view, there was no need for the role of Nethra Raghuraman as a night club dancer on whom 2 songs have been picturised. I guess these are the additions which may have been suggested by the distributors. I feel that the story, screenplay, and dialogues with the exclusions of some songs and some unwarranted scenes would have turned the film into an absorbing thriller. Nonetheless, the film is interesting to watch at least once.

‘Thakshak’ (1999) has 8 songs, written by Mehboob (6) Sukhwinder Singh (1) and Sukhwinder Singh-Tejpal Kaur (1) which were set to music by A R Rahman. None of the songs has been represented on the Blog. I present the first song to appear on the Blog which is my most favourite song from the film. The song is ‘mujhe rang de range de mujhe rang de’ which is a semi-classical dance song. At the same time, the music composition sounds like that of a qawwali song.

The song is written by Sukhwinder Singh jointly with Tejpal Kaur and rendered by Asha Bhosle. There are some Punjabi words in the lyrics.

There is an interesting trivia as to how Sukhwinder Singh got to write this song as well as one more song for the film. He had come to ‘Chennai to meet A R Rahman for the first time. He was composing tunes for ‘Thakshak’ (1999). A R Rahman asked him whether he can write songs. Sukhwinder Singh promptly nodded and wrote the song under discussion. When Rahman asked him to pen one more song, Sukhwinder Singh told him that he has come to get some singing assignments from him. Rahman kept his promise and gave him to sing chal chhainyya chhainyya chhainyya chhainyya from ‘Dil Se’ (1998).[Source: The Asian Age, May 16, 2016].

While listening to this song, I felt that there is some spiritual feel in the opening lines of the songs as it is repeated several times. I remembered that Hazrat Amir Khusrow had written a Sufi Kalam, ‘mohe apne hi rang mein rang de’. This has become inspiration for some lyricists of Hindi films to include this spiritual element. One example is the song, o rangrez, tere rang dariya mein from ‘Bhaag Milka Bhaag’ (2013).

According to Sukaina Nagpal, the song was choreographed by her mother, Saroj Khan. [Source: Rediff interview appeared on July 3, 2020]. It is a 7+ minutes dance song picturised on Tabu who is not a trained dancer. Yet, she has performed the dance gracefully. The confidence of the Choreographer in the dancing ability of Tabu can be judged from the fact that she was covered in mid-shot frame to capture her hand gestures, expressions, and steps most of the time. Some of her shots were of longer durations, which is possible only when it is picturised on a trained dancer. Note Tabu’s expression and hand gestures at 5:36-5:42 in line with the lyrics. Probably, she must have toiled a lot during the rehearsals. All the supportive dancers did very well in synchronization of dancing steps as well as expressions and gestures. For example, watch 3:52 – 4:22 of the video clip. This is, in my view, one of the best dances choreographed by Saroj Khan in Hindi films.

I think after S D Burman, A R Rahman is one among the current music directors who is expert in picking the right playback singer suitable to his style of songs. In this film, he has used Hema Sardesai, Sujata Trivedi, and Alisha Chinoy among female playback singers for other songs. It is said that A R Rahman selects a playback singer only after he has composed the tune and the music for a song. His musical compositions decide the playback singer. For the song under discussion, he has used Asha Bhosle’s voice. And it turned out to be the right choice. Note how Asha Bhosle takes the octave leap from lower to higher pitch effortlessly. Towards the end of the song, her aalaaps are mesmerising. The song ends with Tabu going into a trance true of a Sufi singing.

Lastly, I must make a special mention of the flute interlude in the song from 2:58 to 3:34. I guess, it was played by Flautist, Naveen Kumar who has been continuously associated with A R Rahman since ‘Roja’ (1992) until he moved to Mumbai in 2003. Thereafter, Naveen Kumar played flute for A R Rahman, albeit occasionally.

I can watch the video clip of this song umpteen time because all those who are associated with song have done exceedingly well to make it a classic dance song.

“Bombay” (1995) was written & directed by Mani Ratnam (born Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam) and produced by S. Sriram & Jhamu Sughand. It was the second installment of Ratnam’s trilogy of films that depict human relationships against a backdrop of political turmoil. ‘Roja’ (1992) and ‘Dil Se’ (1998) were the other two.

‘Roja’ had the Kashmir problem causing upheaval in the lives of a newly-wedded couple, when the husband (a cryptologist) is sent on a mission to help Army communications centre intercept military intelligence.
‘Dil Se..’ had Assam insurgency as the backdrop which causes problems in the life of a program executive of All India Radio when he is sent to cover festivities in Assam.

I am going to control myself from giving further descriptions of ‘Roja’ and ‘Dil Se..’. Another common thread between the three films were that the A R Rehman the ‘Mozart of Madras’ was the music director.
“Bombay” was initially thought up as a romantic drama involving a Hindu boy and Muslim girl. At the time that Mani Ratnam was writing the movie India was going through a phase and there were riots post the demolition of the Babri Masjid. It affected him to the extent that the incident and its aftermath found its way into the story. Thus an ordinary love story of a Muslim girl running away to join her love (a Hindu) at his work place in Bombay and the troubles that they faced in riot torn city became a commercially & critically successful movie.

The movie had a cast of Arvind Swamy, Manisha Koirala, Raja Krishnamoorthy, Nassar, Tinnu Anand, Akash Khurana, Prakash Raj etc. Master Hriday & Master Harsha played the twin sons born to the young couple who are named Kabir Narayan & Kamal Basheer. Sonali Bendre & Nagendra Prasad appeared for a song. I learnt, as I sat to write this, that Nagendra Prasad is the brother of Prabhu Deva & Raju Sundaram and son of choreographer/ director Mugur Sundar.

A small titbit about the movie or we can call it a thoughtful casting by Mani Ratnam- Kitty a.k.a. Raja Krishnamoorthy played Basheer the heroine’s father & Nassar played Narayan Pillai the hero’s father. Another titbit about Kitty is that he is born & brought up in Mumbai and I feel great pride in saying that he is an alumni of my school and is an MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management studies. He is one of the actors who has a corporate background, made his debut in films through Mani Ratnam’s ‘Nayakan’ (1987), did a lot of films through the 80s & 90s; post 2000 he is back in the corporate world and acts in the odd film since 2017. He has also written Business and Life Management book. He is very vocal about civic issues.

Here I also feel like talking about Sonali Bendre (the dancer in today’s song) who is a Cancer- survivor. She was born on 1st January 1975 in Mumbai. She made her debut in films through the modelling world. Her debut film was “Aag” in 1994 opposite Govinda where she played a college student who commits suicide on being forced to marry someone whom she doesn’t like. She won a LUX new face award in that years’ Filmfare awards. She has acted opposite all top heroes of the 90s before quitting for family life in 2004. But she has been frequent on the small screen as host, judge etc in television shows. She has also appeared in Tamil & Telugu films. She was diagnosed with Metastatic Cancer in 2018 & underwent treatment in New York. Wishing her all the best and good health too.

The songs for the Tamil version were written by Vairamuthu and Vaali. The Hindi (dubbed) version had Mehboob as the lyricist. Mehboob (Alam Kotwal) had worked with A R Rehman in ‘Rangeela’ and was introduced to Mani Ratnam by ARR. That is how he came to write songs for the dubbed “Bombay”. Today’s song is in the voice of Remo Fernandes.

With this post we also wish A R Rehman on his birthday today. The multi award winner made India proud by winning international awards including two Academy Awards. Wishing the Padma Shri award winner A R Rehman a very Happy Birthday.

‘Cinema’ remains the biggest entertainer for common man in our country. We tend to forget our daily life at least for those three hours when we are watching the movie. Movies are discussed a lot even now and actors and actresses are ‘stars’ (if not ‘super stars’ 😊) .
Music and particularly ‘film music’ is our best friend, companion, motivator and much more…

We are ‘music lovers’ and ‘movie-goers’!!! We love Hindi movies and Hindi Film Music and non-film music too!!!

Regulars on the blog are aware how much I love watching the movies in the theatres. This year ‘2022’ was much better than the last year ‘2021’ in terms of ‘watching movies in the theatres’ for me. In addition to that I watched some movies on OTT platform too. 😊

For me it was like going back into those days when I was studying in 11-12th Standard at Akola and used to watch movies regularly.

This year ‘2022’ saw as many as 106 Hindi films released in theatres and on OTT platform.

Here are the tentative figures (as compiled from the details available on ‘Wikipedia’. But I have doubt for the number of movies mentioned for the month of January’2022.)

I will not go into the details of the names of the movies and discussing which were successful and unsuccessful among them neither will I try to review them here. But I would only like to mention the movies I watched this year and how I find them.

Readers will remember that we end the year ‘2021’ on a ‘happy note’ where I watched the movie ‘83’ two times on consecutive Fridays of its release.
Two songs from this movie ‘83’ were also discussed on the blog then.

I started this year by watching ‘Gumnaami’ (Bangla) on OTT. That was in January 2022. Thereafter it was all preparation started for the marriage of my elder daughter which was scheduled in March 2022. So, though I wish to watch few movies during this period it did not happen.

It was only in the month of May 2022 that we again started watching movies in the theatres with ‘Bhool Bhulaiyya-2’. Then followed ‘Jugg Jugg Jeeyo’, ‘Bramhaastra’, ‘Chup’, ‘Goodbye’, ‘The Last Film Show’ (Chhello Divas), ‘Ram Setu’, ‘Drishyam-2’ and some movies on OTT like ‘RRR’, ‘Cuttputlli’, ‘Freddy’, ‘Drishyam-1’, and one Japanese (😊) movie) (I am forgetting its name) which my younger daughter was watching.

I had earlier mentioned that I get to listen songs on FM radio every morning while travelling to workplace. In this time the first program I listen to is ‘Ham hai Raahi Pyaar ke’ on ‘Vividh Bharati’ which mainly consists of ‘older songs’ and thereafter it is ‘Big FM’ for two-three songs which they play from the ‘seventies’ and again back to ‘Vividh Bharati’ for ‘Bharat Ki Goonj’ which starts at 08:05 in the morning. In this program they play songs from newer movies or latest movies and movies from recent years.

Today’s song is one such song which I like and I am presenting to you today. This song is from the movie ‘Mili-2022’.

I think this title ‘Mili’ is not used as frequently, and we have this title used after the ‘1975’ movie ‘Mili’ again only now.
Today’s song is sung by A.R. Rehman and Shashaa Tirupati.

‘Mili-2022’ is directed by Mathukutty Xavier for ‘Zee Studios’.

It had Janhvi Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal, Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, Jackie Shroff (special appearance), Hasleen Kaur, Rajesh Jais, Vikram Kochhar, Anurag Arora, Sanjay Suri, Joginder Goyat, Raghav Binani and others.

This movie has five songs (including one two-part song of today). Music for this movie is composed by A.R. Rehman and lyrics are by Javed Akhtar.

I have yet to watch this movie. But I like the today’s song from this movie.

This song is a background song and in the picturization we can see Janhvi Kapoor, Sunny Kaushal, Manoj Pahwa, and others on the screen.

Lyrics are by Javed Akhtar and music is composed by A.R. Rehman.

The ‘genre’ of the today’s song is my favorite one and I like such songs very much. Because it is about our journey … we are all travelers… we have to complete our journey…

PS: I was preparing this write-up I got a email from my employers that my contract has expired today and it is not being renewed for now 😊 So I have got the much needed break now …No issues … music is there with me …

Once upon a time, in our office, the crowd was more interfering in each other’s lives. There would be judgmental comments about each other, if someone works very hard, there was gossip about them. If someone is not very hard working there would be gossip and snide comments about them. 90’s and early 2000’s was a time when all had more time to bother about other people. Interference is one way to look at it. We were in one corner of Mumbai, and there were very few people who travelled long distances to arrive, and most of us were from nearby areas. There was less of anonymity or disregard of big city atmosphere. Come to think of it, most of us used to think of the office as a second home. As the working day would be full of work, talking to people and friends. We were more open to all sort of talk, discussions and even gossip. The office building would be like a small village, where everyone knew everything about everyone. That was an atmosphere, where, every new day was a new beginning. And come weekend, we would be full of plans for the next week. On Monday, we will do this or start on that work.

I don’t know, it feels as if things have gradually changed over the decades. Now every Friday, most of us actually feel joy that there will be no office for 2 days. Long weekend is more joyous, we all wish each other happy weekend. Whereas earlier it was, ‘see you on Monday’.
There was no A.C. in the office, nor fancy blinds or fancy name plates on the cabins, not much eating out and very few snack parties. But those were the happier days. Today, I have more money to spend, more authority to assert, freer to shop what ever the sales persons bring to sell, more snacks and lunch to order from outside eateries, as the office canteen is still is very bad. But the comradery of old days is absent. For sure, not all is ingenuine, but still the happiness quotient is gone. Or maybe I am simply bored.

Yeah, change is a part of life. Colleagues and friends of the older generation have all retired. Some of the dear friends have moved away, or transferred to different places. One corner of Mumbai has begun to feel and behave like a city. I am ready to admit, that I may have also changed. As we mature, it brings a certain discretion, in how we deal with new people. What was working and meeting with other people, has now become more of a dealing with people. Or having learnt from so many experiences, I have learnt to have superficial contact with people. I thought being superficial is just not my nature. But recently, I am introspecting, that maybe I have become like everyone else. Not a good sight.

I have seen some people in my life, and every time I have resolved, never to be like them. Some times we encounter people with really ugly mindset. I have a friend, who would always be looking for excuses, why certain person behaves like that, or has such type of manner. For a longish time, I also tried to look the other way, whenever such ugliness showed its face. I became so adept at ignoring things, that it would take a new person coming into the set up and that person would show me with examples, that such and such things are happening and I am not even aware. So, this was actually a sort of tuning out, from the atmosphere, so the bad things are totally ignored.

The reason I went into the flashback and into those good old days is the song from the film ‘Taal’. In early 2000’s we used to have lot of extra curricular activities in the office. One of the favourite events was ‘antakshari’. In one of those competitions, I had my friend as my partner. This one was a serious competition, very serious with all the contestants very keen to win. The hosts had done lot of hard work, to prepare for the tough rounds. One such tough rounds were picking up chits of a set of words, and recognize the song, which I found to be very easy. We did very well in that round. We did well in the round for recognizing the mukhda from the stanza also. Then there was the round of ‘dumb-charade’ where the chit was for movie name. My partner, picked up the chit and it was ‘Taal’. She made the suitable ‘Taal’ action and I knew the name. But unfortunately, I could not sing any song, none would come to mind. Both me and my friend were repeating ‘taal se taal milaa’, but that is not mukhda. So, we lost those crucial points, despite recognizing so many of the songs in stanza/mukhda round and the ‘set of word’ round, we finished second.

The movie ‘Taal’ was produced and directed by Subhash Ghai, who celebrated his birthday on 24/01/2022. Now it is the birthday of Kavita krishnamurthy today, so the second version is by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sukhwendra Singh with Chorus. First version is actually a group song, which has Sonu Nigam with ARR, Anuradha Sriram, and Sujata Mohan. This song has long been in the list of Sonu Nigam songs, which I want to post. No better occasion, then Kavita Krishnamurthy’s birthday and post no. two of series on ARR. The Kavita Krishnamurthy version is listed as a separate song actually, but the same mukhda of first version is part of this song too, so it is a version song. The songs are picturized on Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna.

Those were cable TV days, so I have seen this movie on cable TV. Some Sundays were spent watching movies on cable TV, 2-5 and then 6-9 shows. They would show the newer movies at 11-2 also sometimes. Like all Subash Ghai movies, this was also a musical, teaming up with ARR for the first time, who teamed up with Anand Bakshi as lyricist for the first time. I find this score of a purely hindi film much more attractive then, the dubbed songs in Mani Ratnam films.

Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I will meet you there. – Rumi

Some years ago, I received a Whatsapp forward featuring a sketch with Rumi’s character, in a 21st century setting. This requires careful description, so you all please be patient with me.

There he was, 13th century persian poet and philosopher, Jalaludding Rumi, turban and all, sitting on one end of a small primitive boat. A boat that fits in a New York apartment’s living room. Guess who is doing the honors of ‘Chappu chalauing’ at the other end of the boat? It was Chandler, of ‘Friends’ fame. Imagine a boat on the floor of a city living room, at one end Chandler is roving the boat and Rumi is sitting on the other end. The caption with it, also in 21st century English, read “When you are looking for a Roomie and misspell it!”

Ha Ha Ha Ha. If no one is laughing, I have only myself to blame for thinking of Rumi. “ham wahan hain jahan se ham ko bhi kuchh hamaari khabar nahi aati”

I have been exposed to some episodes of ‘Friends’, so identifying Chandler was the easy bit in the caricature. I could connect, the word “Roomie” to Rumi after some deliberation, but never having seen Rumi, or his picture or sketch, I was wondering who is the peasant in the boat. And what is a boat doing in the living room? It transpired that Rumi had arrived in his boat in response to the ad posted by Chandler for a roomie, as he misspelt it as Rumi. Since in Rumi’s time the preferred mode of transport was a boat, Persia is sure to have been full of rivers. Or canals, like Venice.

But I quite liked the idea of a boat in the living room. I did contemplate, on a real-life boat, the size of a two-three seater sofa, which was available for sale in a handicraft shop in Alleppy, Kerela. I could not figure out a way of transporting it to Mumbai, so had to drop the idea. I have a few embellished display size boats, but it is not the same. Now, after writing all this, I am thinking I should make another attempt at it.

At least a boat is doable, but imagine if someone is fond of trains, how will they get them in the living room. Trains are good for travelling, they take you from Point A to Point B, that is their usefulness. I have seen a train on the dining table with tracks and all, for movement of serving dishes, somewhere in a museum, probably. Now that is nice idea, if the kitchen is next of the dining section, a train can be made and for variety, a tunnel or two can added in the landscape. My imagination is running away with me.

I have finally arrived at the destination point, i. e. a train song. An iconic song for our generation of movie goers. A sufiana song written by Gulzar and composed by A. R. Rehman for Dil Se(1998). Singers are Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi. There is a lot of trivia available here about this song. There is this page too, which states that this song and video was at 9th position in the poll for top 10 all time songs, for which people from 55 countries voted. This poll was conducted by BBC world service.

The original composition of a solo by Sukhwinder Singh titled “Thaiyya thaiya” is also part of the movie’s song track, though it was not used in the film. The song begin with the lines “Eid aayi mera yaar nayi aaya”, but it is actually based on Bulle Shah’s “Tere ishq nachaya kar thhaiya thhaiya”. The version is mostly in Punjabi, with the same tune. So, I thought maybe that should be treated as a separate song.

These films songs are among the best of A. R. Rehman, Gulzar and Lata Mangeshkar. And they will be the best of Udit Narayan & Mahalaxmi Iyer(Aye Ajnabi), Sonu Nigam & Kavita Krishnamurthy(tu hi tu satragi re), Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi(Chhaiyya chhaiyya).

The song becomes iconic due to its picturization of a group of dancers, with Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora, dancing atop a running train. It is shot in location of Ooty. This is also the best of Farah Khan’s choreography. This is among the first few outdoorsy songs I shortlisted for posting in the blog.

Gulzar sahab is talking of ‘Jannat’ and ‘Firdaus’, which means Paradise. ‘Gulposh is invisible, kaayenaat is universe, Taaveez is talisman, ‘aayat’ is sentence/verse(scholars say ‘aayat’ in the quranic context are niether sentence nor verse, it is an entirely different unit of deliverance) of Al-Quran which are in Arabic. What Gulzar sahab may mean in this line ‘mera naghma wahi mera kalma wahi’, is that ishq as a philosophy is my song, my first and last word.

The first thought the word ‘Urdu’ invokes in the minds of Urdudaan as well as non-urdudaan, is its sweetness (Shireen) and cultured-ness(muhazzib). These two things ‘shireeni’ and ‘tehzeeb’ go hand in hand and are two sides of the same coin. This literally means, the object of ishq is anything that has flagrant aura and talks speaks and sings with a sweetness. Fragrance is a thing which is also pure, clean and invisible. Sincerity and unpretentiousness, plus a sweet way of conduct and speech is:

Meri kaayenaat

Shaam is a time of relaxation and liesure and raat is for resting. ‘Kaayenaat’ is my ‘universe of abundance’. So there goes, if the object of my ishq is, the highest ideals of sincerity and good conduct, then it will be my contentment and happiness for which sky in the limit. Is this the salvation and moksh in this life?

And

Jin ke sar ho ishq ki chhaaon
Paaon ke neeche jannat hogi

They both mean the same, that those who live under the shade of such an ishq, heaven/paradise is theirs.

Remembering Jalaluddin Rumi and his philosophy is eventually justified by Gulzar sahab’s this master piece. Maybe the quote is the wrong one, the correct one is this:

“There is no salvation for the soul but to fall in love. Only lovers can escape out of these two worlds.” – Rumi

I have been thinking for sometime now that there so many iconic songs composed by ARR, that a garland or a necklace of these gems can be made. So I have chosen myself to do this series. The first episode is this song, starting on the birthday of ARR. I have done a few posts of his songs in the blog earlier for songs of ‘lagan’ ‘zubieda’ ‘sapney’ etc. This is by far an ambitious series for me to undertake, as it is very difficult to fit theses gems in a particular form to complete a cohesive design of the necklace. I will play by the ear, and God willing try to complete this series in 2022.

Hullo Atuldom

It is winter and the temperatures in Bangalore and adjoining regions have taken a dip. I am sure North India will be much colder, I don’t know what is the experience of those in western and eastern India. But then, winter is the feature for the entire Northern hemisphere at this time of the year.

We have categories on the blog, that songs are tagged under. The Category “Rain” and “Saawan” have around 86 and 109 posts/ songs respectively. “Saawan” is used to talk of rains and is also the month in the Hindu calendar, when the Indian sub-continent experiences heavy monsoon rains.

In sharp contrast we have only 2 posts for “Summer” category and 5 for the “Snowy Mountain” category. No separate category for winter, cold winds etc. Does that mean that there are no songs in Hindi films that are filmed in winter, when the cold winds blow etc.? No. I recall songs from “Junglee”, “Kasmir Ki Kali”, “Aap Ki Kasam” and hundreds of other films that have ever-so-popular songs that were filmed on the snowy slopes of the many hill-stations that the Himalayan range offers. But when songs from these movies were being posted on the blog, in the infancy stages of the blog i.e., Atulji may not have thought of this particular category; if he had, then this category would have had lots of songs. Today’s song will fit the bill for “Snowy Mountain”.

This song is from the 1992 release, Mani Ratnam directed and K. Balachander produced “Roja”. It had a cast of Pankaj Kapur, Madhoo (billed as Madhubala), Arvind Swamy, and a whole lot of South Indian actors. This is because “Roja” was made in Tamil and later its dubbed versions were released in other languages. The movie had some melodious songs that were written by Vairamuthu (in the Tamil original) and P.K.Mishra (for the Hindi dubbed version). The playback singers used (in Hindi) were Hariharan, Minmini, Sujatha Mohan, Shweta Rao, Baba Sehgal, S.P. Balasubramaniam, KS Chitra. The music director was A R Rehman.

“Roja” was the story of a gritty- young lady. The lady, Roja (Madhoo) is married to a man who was selected as a prospective groom for her older sister. But the to-be-groom (Rishi) takes a liking for Roja. She agrees to the marriage after getting to know that her older sister is happy that she was rejected (she had her heart set on marrying another guy). Roja settles in her husband’s (Arvind Swamy) home when she gets to know that he has been selected to go on deputation to Jammu-Kashmir for helping the army communication center with military intelligence. The young couple find themselves in alien yet beautiful land. Roja’s life turns upside-down when her husband is abducted by Kashmiri terrorists demanding the release of a leader of their’s in exchange. The movie shows how Roja runs from pillar-to-post to get assistance in rescuing her husband, specially when she has a language problem too- she can communicate only in Tamil. (This part got diluted in the Hindi-dubbed version though).

The song with this post happens when the young couple- Roja and Rishi- are exploring the snow clad Baramulla, and honeymooning. It is in the voices of SPB sir and K S Chitra.
The Tamil version of the song was sung by Sujatha Mohan and Unni Menon.

With this post we are wishing the music director, singer, Oscar-award winner A R Rehman on turning a year older today. In addition to the Oscars he has a few Filmfare and National awards to his name. Plus the government of India has conferred the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan on Rehman. We wish him health and happiness and hope to have lots of great music from him.

Hullo Atuldom

“Pukaar” (2000) was a Rajkumar Santoshi directed and Surinder Kapoor, Boney Kapoor, and Bharat Shah production. It had dialogues and screenplay by Anjum Rajabali and Rajkumar Santoshi, lyricists were Majrooh Sultanpuri (who wrote four songs) and Javed Akhtar (wrote two songs). A R Rehman was the music director. The cast was headed by Madhuri Dixit, Namrata Shirodkar, Anil Kapoor; Farida Jalal, Girish Karnad, Om Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Danny, Rohini Hattangadi, K D Chandran, Anjan Shrivastav, Govind Namdeo, Mukesh Rishi etc. in supporting roles. There was a surprise element in the cast, which I shall get to later in the post.

The movie was a fictional account of the terrorist problems plaguing India. We had Anil Kapoor playing Major Jaidev Rajvansh and Farida Jalal and Girish Karnad played his parents. Major Jaidev has Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) as his childhood friend who has been in love with him forever. The Major and his fellow officers manage to rescue a leading politician and also capture the terrorist (Abhrush played by Danny) who has masterminded the kidnapping of the politician (Govind Namdeo).

The movie had all the masala needed for calling itself a patriotic movie- terrorist (supposedly from Pakistan), corrupt politician, men in uniform who go beyond their prescribed calling in tracing/tracking the terrorist in spite of being severely wounded or even dying in the melee. The whole movie is set in some picturesque hill-town which has a colonial Town Hall where the climax takes place. The terrorists decide to blow up the town hall and its clock tower with the help of time-bombs and our severely wounded hero with his highly repentant girl friend (why the girl is repentant can be understood if one sees the movie)- who are both tied to structure- have all the time duration of the song/ event being held in the premises of the Town Hall to discover and deactivate the bombs.

We are having the song that is being staged during the climax with this post. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. On screen the person lip-syncing the song is Lata Mangeshkar herself (the surprise element that I wrote about earlier). I was awed when I saw the song for the first time ever all those years back – 21 years back to be exact. She was only 71 then. The song has The Lata Mangeshkar playing herself and singing this plaintive appeal to end all violence. She appears in her trademark saree with a group of kids who also emote the song rather well. We can see Girish Karnad and Farida Jalal in the audience and Danny stealthily making his way into the premises using forged ID card.

We all know that Lata didi (as the whole entertainment industry addresses her) had faced the camera at the beginning of her career. Recently I received this video of a Marathi song where she appears with her sisters in the group of children singing at a party. Our blog also has the first ever song in Hindi which was for the marathi movie “Gaja Bhaau” (1943).

Same date, last year, Atulji has taken up the daunting task of trying to list every single Hindi movie where Lata Mangeshkar has even ‘hummed’ a line. That series was kicked off with this post. That is material for about 64 posts and at the rate of one-post per week we reached post number 53 this Monday, the series kick started on her birthday, last year.

I may not be a huge fan of this “Bharat Ratna”, but I always try to sing her songs and admire the way she modulates her voice to suit the situation, actor and emotion of the song. I love many of the songs she has sung but will not sit to enlist them here.

Me, with my feeling of being a candle in front of such a huge personality, also try to send a post/song to wish this Nightingale lots of good health and cheer.
