Today’s song is from the film Naag Panchami-1953.

The 5th Tithi or the 5th day of Saawan (Shrawan) is celebrated as NAAG PANCHAMI. On this day, Naag/Cobras or simply any snake in general is worshipped. This is because Snakes are considered as Farmer’s friends. Snakes eat mice, which destroy stored grains and standing crops too. Mice also spread many diseases in villages.

Worshipping Snakes is a symbolic way to acknowledge their importance to the Farmers and spread the message of environmental balance. On this day, young girls in the villages tie Jhoola(swing) on trees and sing songs.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Naag Panchami-1953.

What do we know about snakes, in general ? Whenever and wherever a snake is found, the tendency is to kill it. Humans have an inherent fear about snakes. Not all snakes are poisonous or venomous and very few are capable of killing humans with their venoms. Out of all the 3500 known snake species only 20 % are venomous and only 7 % can kill humans, as per a study. Actually, snakes are very useful creatures, particularly for the farmers. They eat rats-who destroy the standing crops and stored grains. Non-Venomous snakes are eaten with relish in China and some other countries in the Far East.

The king of snakes- Vasuki, according to Mythology was born to Sage Kashyap and wife Kadru. Vasuki is considered as the leader of all snakes in the Naag Lok. Vasuki was so long and strong that he was used as a rope for Samudra Manthan by Gods and Asurs. The elder brother of Vasuki-Sheshnag balances the universe on its head He is also used as a bed for Lord Vishnu. The younger brother Vasuki adorns the neck of Lord Shiva.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Sakshi Gopal-1957.

Those who write on films of the 1950’s decade can not escape religious films, because maximum Mythological and Religious films were made in this decade. I, particularly, have been attracted to ‘Dharmik’ films since childhood and have been writing on such films from the beginning. In fact, my first ever post on this Blog was on a Mythological film – ” Savitri”-1937. I do hope that even my last post, whenever it takes place, will also be on a religious film !

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Qawwalis – Part-2 – Post-13)

(Debutant Movie – Sikkaa-1976)

Today I am presenting a lesser heard or never heard Qawwaalee song from the movie ‘Sikkaa-1976’. I do not remember to have discussed or heard about this title during my growing up years in the seventies. I became aware of this movie title through Geet Kosh Volume-V (1971-1980). It seems that this movie ‘Sikkaa’ was an obscure movie of its time, as the list of the songs of this movie didn’t appear familiar to me. But what piqued my interest is the title of this song and it being mentioned as a ‘qawwaalee’ song.

“Sikkaa-1976” was directed by Dilip Bose for ‘Mona Movies, Bombay’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.12.1976. It had Anil Dhawan, Ambika Johar, Krishan Dhawan, Satyen Kappu, Helen, Aashu, Bhushan Tiwari, Mohan Choti, Rajan Haksar, Kalpana Shah, Agha, Dalda, Jugnu, Bholanath, Ratan Gaurang, Satish Khanna, Krishna Khanna, Pradeep Suri, Child artiste Dharmender and others. Child artistes Lovely, Kittu, and Soni make their debut in this movie and Nana Palsikar, Keshto Mukherjee and Anjana Mumtaz had special appearances in this movie.

Nowadays I am presenting saawan songs from Hindi films that were so far missing from the blog. In this process I am coming across surprises on a daily basis. I am discovering some great compositions.

Everybody has his/her own preferences in music. As for me, I mostly enjoy those creations that I had not listened to earlier.

While looking for songs thst I had never heard before, I got to listen to these songs and I noted them down to be used for my write-ups. That is how I got to listen to these songs, by specifically searching for them, something that most normal music lovers are not likely to do.
