‘Daasi’ (1981) was produced by Subhash Verma and was directed by Raj Khosla. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Vikram, Paintal, Radhika Bartake, Sidharth Kak, Dhumal, Leela Mishra, Sundar, Narbada Shankar, Anita Advani etc.
The film was planned in 1976 based on a Hindi novel, ‘Mangala’ (1958) written by Anant Gopal Shevde. The main plank of the story in the novel is that Mangala goes through a deceitful arranged marriage with a blind singer, Pandit Sadananda. As a revenge, she rebels against the marriage by seducing her husband’s best friend and finally eloping with him. In the end, Mangala returns to her husband, Pandit Sadananda and becomes a vocalist under his tutelage. However, during the film’s planning stage, the producer and distributors felt that the plot was too bold and the audience may not accept it. Raj Khosla majorly tweaked the story of the novel for the film by making the husband’s friend (Rakesh Roshan) as her ex-lover and making him a grey character. Today’s song is from the film Daasi-1944.
This film was made by Pradhan films, Lahore.
In the Pre-Partition period, there were some important film centres like Bombay, Poona, Kolhapur, Calcutta and Lahore, as far as Hindi/Urdu films were concerned. Though comparatively Lahore was the youngest center, having made its first silent film only in 1924, experts across the border and in India claim that Lahore had the potential of becoming, if not bigger, but as big a center as Bombay ! In that era Lahore did make a lot of contribution in the field of acting, direction and music. Several experts have written long articles on Lahore’s standing in Hindi and Punjabi film making.

Nowadays it is happening with me regularly that whenever I come across a new song (newer to me) I check for its movie name, and when I became aware of the name of the movie I check it on the blog. I am under the impression that this movie surely is on the blog. But, when I found that the movie is not yet available on the blog, I do not believe it and keep checking many times in various lists . The recent such instances is the movie ‘Taxi Chor-1980’ and another one is the today’s movie.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Daasi’ (1944).
The film was made by Pradhan Pictures, Lahore, and was directed by Hiren Bose. The music was by Pt. Amarnath Batish (to avoid ‘same name confusion‘ the other Music Director Pt. Amarnath Chawla, I am mentioning their surnames also). Funniest thing is Pradhan Pictures was owned by Sanjay Pradhan – a person from Orissa, Director hiren Bose was from Bengal and Pt. Amarnath, MD was from Punjab. They all came together in the most popular and beautiful city of those times ‘Lahore’, to make a film which became a hit, mostly because of its music.

We all know that Mukesh was regarded as Raj Kapoor’s voice. The film audience accepted it, though in my view, Raj Kapoor’s voice matched more with that of Manna Dey. I came across a somewhat similar situation albeit on a smaller scale in the 40s with reference to a lead actor of that time viz Ragini and the playback singer Zeenat Begum. It is said that Zeenat Begum’s voice matched so much with that of Ragini that many filmgoers of that time felt that it was Ragini who was singing for herself on the screen. Obviously, during that period, Zeenat Begum became the main playback singer for Ragini and with this tag, she became the playback singer for many lead actors of that time. I have mentioned it that I know very little about the movies and actors that came before late 1940s. For instance, I have very little knowledge about this movie called “Daasi” (1944). As the name of the movie suggests, this movie has to be about a woman suffering at the hand of her husband. But that is all the knowledge I have. Then I have the songs of this movie to go by.
