It is the birthday of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This gorgeous Miss World 1994 is also a Padma award winner along with awards for Best Actress (Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam) and Best Actress in a supporting role as Parvati (Devdas).

“Devdas” (1935), based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s blockbuster novel of the same name was directed by P C Barua for New Theatres, Calcutta. The Hindi version of the movie was preceded by Bangla version and followed by Assamese version. All these versions were directed by P C Barua, though the actors were different in the three versions.

“Devdas” was a Bangla Novel written in 1917 by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. This novel proved out to be so popular that several movies have been made on this story in several languages in India ever since. Even Pakistan and Bangladesh have made one movie each on this topic recently.

June 30th is the date of the publication of Saratchandra Chaterjee’s famous novel Devdas. It was published in 1917, thus we celebrated its 97th birthday on 30 june this year (2014). Devdas has, like no other novel before it or after, captured the imagination of film-makers in India. According to Wikipedia, there have been 16 films based on this story. Two of them have been made in Pakistan and Bangladesh each.

Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay (also known as Sharat Chandra) was a well known Bengali novelist. Some of his works have been made into feature films in many languages. It is said that more than 50 films have been madethat are based on or inspired from his novels. Apart from some well known Hindi films such as ‘Devdas’ (1935, 1955, 2002) and ‘Parineeta’ (1953, 2005), there were other Hindi films based on his novels and stories such as ‘Pujarin’ (1936), ‘Kashinath’ (1943), ‘Biraj Bahu’ (1954), ‘Majhli Didi’ (1967), ‘Chhoti Bahu’ (1971), ‘Khushboo’ (1975), ‘Swami’ (1977) etc. But the most talked about film based on his novel is ‘Devdas’.

One of the main reasons why the songs of the golden era went on to become timeless classics was that great importance was given to lyrics of the songs. Among all the movies based on the story of “Devdas”,”Devdas”(1955) is arguably the most memorable one in all respects, and unarguably so as far as its music is comcerned. The musical team of this movie, as well as the team on whom the songs were picturised cannot be replicated again.
