Saajan ki ho gayi gori

Posted on: July 30, 2013

“Devdas” (1955) was produced and directed by Bimal Roy. The movie was based on Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name. A movie on this novel was made in 1935 with K L Saigal in the title role and that movie ended up being a classic.

“Devdas” (1955) had Dilip Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Johnny Walker, Pran, Suchitra Sen, Motilal, N Hussain etc in it.

This movie ended up becoming a musical extravaganza, just like its predecessor.

Nine songs from “Devdas” (1955) have been discussed in the past. Here is the tenth and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey. The song described the mental state of a girl who is about to get married. The lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi described it quite succinctly and effectively. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

With this song, “Devdas” (1955) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

saajan ki ho gayi gori ee
saajan ki ho gayi
haay re

abb ghar ka aangan
bides laage re
haay haay saajan ki ho gayi
gori saajan ki ho gayi

sooni si laage maayke ki galiyaan
sooni si laagen
bhaaye naa
naa naa bhaaye naa
abb ji ko bachpan ki sakhiyaan
bhaaye naa aa
nainon mein jhoome
sehre ki ladiyaan
mann ko lubhaayen
sejiyaa ki kaliyaan
har swaas pi kaa
har swaas pi kaa
sandes laage re
abb ghar ka aangan
bides laage re
haay haay saajan ki ho gayi
gori saajan ki ho gayi

kuchh jaagi jaagi
kuchh soi soi
kuchh jaagi jaagi
baithi hai raadhe
o dekho
o dekho
baithi hai raadhe
sapnon mein khoyi dekho
baithi hai raadhe

chheda toh samjho
roi ke roi
aise mein isko tokey na koi
naajuk taapan
naajuk taapan pe na thes laage re
abb ghar ka aangan
bides laage re
haay haay saajan ki ho gayi
gori saajan ki ho gayi

badhti hai pal pal
agni lagan ki
badhti hai pal pal
chatke hai nas nas
komal badan ki
chatke hai nas nas
ham jaante hain sab iske mann ki
abb ho chuki yeh apne sajan ki
naihar ka jeevan
naihar ka jeevan
kales laage re
abb ghar ka aangan
bides laage re

haay haay saajan ki ho gayi
gori saajan ki ho gayi

I think this is called Baul Sangeet of Bengal which is very soothing to the frayed nerves. There was a prog. at Yeshwant Hall at Nariman Pt of the famous baul singers last week.

Yippeeee!! Devdas (1955) joins the ranks of movies where all songs from the movie have been discussed on this blog. Thank you Atul Ji!

In the past you have discussed songs deleted from movies (see for example “Jaata kahaan hai deewaane sab kuchh yahaan hai sanam” from C.I.D. So why not discuss a deleted song from Devdas (1955)?

The well known song “Piya tose naina laage re” written by Shailendra for S D Burman ‘s Guide (what you have described as a timeless classic) was originally written by Shailendra for S D Burman ‘s Devdas. The wording was slightly different and the background instruments were slightly different but you can easily see the similarity.

The song was filmed but deleted. Here is the video link (other links can be found on YouTube by search)

One person mixed audio of “piya tose” into video of “Devdas”(1955) and uploaded on YT. Lots of people who did not read the disclaimer jumped to this conclusion that this song was originally meant for “Devdas”(1955) and this video went viral. Now there are lots of gullible people further spreading this disinformation.

When confronted, the person mixing audio of “Guide”(1965) song with video of “Devdas”(1955) claims that he had “clearly” mentioned this fact while uploading it. His clear mention was obviously not clear enough for lots of YT viewers.
Here is the clarification from that uploader:
The day I uploaded this superimposed video I clearly mentioned in the video information that the song is from Guide (1965) and the video is from Devdas. Also the playlist on my channel (SUPERIMPOSEMENT) verifies this. I am not spreading any fake news, people have misinterpreted this video without going any actual confirmation.
