Nightingale Noorjehaan – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
After a long long time I am trying to plunge again in Atul’s wonderful Blog. This presentation, is my sixtieth contribution.
I am going to track Noorjehan songs from the latest to the earliest and will try to complete, as far as possible, her wonderful contributions to Hindi Film Music. Her films of 1947 in our motherland, before she left for Pakistan were ‘Jugnu’ and ‘Mirza Sahiba’. All songs with her voice in these films are covered in this Blog. So I come to the year 1946. There were three films viz, ‘Hamjoli’, ‘Dil’ and ‘Anmol Ghadi’. Today I will start with ‘Hamjoli’.

THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS….Song No. 2
———————————————–
Today’s song is a duet of Talat and Lata, from the film ‘Meharbani-50’. The film makes a debut on the Blog with this song.
The Music Director of this film was HAFIZ KHAN. Now, this name is a case of “Same Name Confusion” with many people. There were Two composers of the same name, active in the same time period. There was one Hafiz Khan singer, who was given the nick name of Mastana by his senior Meer Sahib. Hafiz Khan Mastana was essentially a singer. He sang in Hindi films from 1938 to 1959 in over 100 films singing about 200 songs, according to one source. He also gave music to 24 Hindi films, from 1940 to 1952. He also acted in 5 films.
The Music Director Hafiz Khan of today’s song, was a trained expert Sarangiya (Sarangi Player) from Lahore. His first film as a composer was Zeenat-1945. The other composers with him here were Meer Sahib and Rafiq Gaznavi. This film’s music became famous because of the First ever All female qawali “Aahen na bhari, shikwe na kiye” in it. Hafiz Khan had also composed 4 melodious songs in this film. He gave music to Zeenat-45, Humjoli-46, Meharbani-50, Lakeeren-54, Mera salaam-57 and his last film Shareef Daku-60.

Chaandni raaten – Song No. 17
————————————–
chandni raaten
ho. . oo. .
chaandni raaten
sab jag soye
ham jaagen
taaron se karen baaten
ho. . oo. .
chaandni raaten
ho. . oo. .
chaandni raaten
This song has over the years been heard here and there. I was aware this is some remix song of an old song, just like the remix of the song ‘Kitni Akeli Kitni Tanhaa Si Lagi‘ from film ‘Talaash’ (1969). I used to think that ‘Kitni Akeli. . . ‘ song was a Kishore Kumar song and remixed. It was many years later that I heard the original Lata Mangeshkar song composed by SD Burman.

So, we reached yet another century of songs yesterday (16 august 2014), viz song number 10100. After the great excitement and anticipation associated with the 10,000th song, this next century song almost went unnoticed. 🙂 In one of the few comments that were made in it, it was mentioned by Raja that the 10k th song appeared to have been posted just a few days back. In reality that was four weeks back. So this century took nearly one month and that is slow going by the standards of this blog.

Wonderful gems still to waiting to be rediscovered, and in the queue for making an appearance on this blog. Well, one day this treasure may all be known and documented, but thankfully, that day is still a long way off. And the journey of the musical bandwagon on this blog, continues on its merry way, searching, researching, documenting and posting. Oh, what a joy.
