The days of comedians having a special role with well defined characters and a pivotal role in the main story of the film or parallel story were well and truly over by early 70’s. This is especially true about actors like Mehmood and Johnny Walker. They had a meaty role as well a heroine to sing songs with. One or two songs were a must for them in every film they starred. I really think there should a separate tag of category for this extinct species of comic actor. A tag for “Mehmood song” and “Johnny walker song” will not look out of place in a blog like this.

Usually when we go on a road trip and if I am driving, my husband and kids knows which songs I am going to listen, I mean of which artist. So, when I ask them to play my ipod, without any inquiry, they would start playlist of Rafi. Second playlist consists of all romantic songs, another playlist is about blue mood songs, the next one is prayer/bhajans/gospel which I play in the morning. Last but not least is the playlist of songs which I can listen to any time/part of the day. I have named it as all time favorite.

Sometimes the directors of Hindi films will put across really strange scenarios, that one does not really expect to see in the films, especially in the formula or near formula films that are a hallmark of the Indian film industry. Now, think of Helen, and the very first thing that will come to mind is a dance song. In a variety of dance forms, whether that be a folk dance (a handful), a classical (very very few indeed), a fun song (very many) or a cabaret dance (a huge number), when one sees Helen on the screen, she is singing a song, and dancing. Some time back on a particular post, we came across a Helen dance song in which she is not singing herself, someone else is. In response, others readers identified more such songs where Helen did not sing, while she was dancing on the screen.

There have been quite a few Rafi songs where Rafi has sung with such high energy levels that the listeners are left gasping for breath literally. To this day I keep wondering how a singer can sing with such high energy level throughout in a song lasting well over three minutes and sometimes more. Songs of “Junglee”(1961), “Rajkumar”(1964),”Prince” (1967),”Saawan Bhaadon”(1970) etc readily come to mind as songs whose energy levels could have lit up a few households if harnessed properly.

When I saw the list of songs remaining to complete the score of films in this blog, given by our own in house encyclopedia, Deshmukh Sir, I was actually thrilled that one song from ‘Asli Naqli” was remaining. The song in question is “Laakh chhupaao chhup na sakegaa raaz ho kitna gehraa” is something I am familiar with and very fond.

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

In 1949, our Hindi film music got richer by the induction of a new lyricists team of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra and the new music director duo of Shanker-Jaikishan to the Hindi film industry. Raj Kapoor was their god father and the film BARSAAT (1949) was to decide their destiny. The film became a super hit and this combined team of lyricists and musical duo ruled the Hindi film industry for the next two decades with their down to earth lyrics with masterly compositions. It is said that with successes at every stage, ego problems do crop up leading to crack in the team. It was creditable that the entire team of Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailedra, Shanker-Jaikishanand Raj Kapoor lasted until the death of Shailendra in December 1966 and enriched the golden era of Hindi film music with their contributions.
