In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂

“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. “Shart” (1954) was a Filmistan Production. The movie was directed by B Mitra. The movie had Deepak, Shyama, Shashikala, Mohana, Sulochana, Chaman Puri, Jagdish Kanwal, I. S. Johar etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and chorus. I had great difficulty in identifying the actors in the picturisation. They are all familiar faces but they are so young in this picturisation that they are almost unrecognisable. Shashikala lip syncs in Geeta Dutt’s voice. Her accomplice in this picturisation is played by a thin bearded person, who is none other that I S Johar. From the picturisation, it seems that they are upto some mischief as befit the conduct of villains in Hindi movies.
