Phoolon se dosti hai

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂
“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.
Taanga are dwindling in numbers though since maintaining them is a tall order and the other competing moded of transportations are easier to operate in comparison.
In Hindi movies, “Taanga” songs were often songs full of enthusiasm and joie de vivre, where the singer would sing an upbeat song seated beside the driver, with a lady seated in the rear would look on approvingly.
Here is a nice and rare Taanga song from “Duniya Jhukti Hai” (1960). The song is sung by Rafi. It is lip synced by Sunil Dutt, with Agha being the taanga driver.

DUNIYA JHUKTI HAI-1960 was a Wadia Movietone film,which was a surprise.Wadiya MT was known only to make stunt or costume films of B grade.This was a social film trying to give a message that Evil work never pays.
Anyway,the prod/director was JBHWadia himself and the Music was by Hemant kumar,ably assisted by Rizbert,his loyal companion of many movies.This Rizbert was from Goa and was an expert.like othe Goanese in film industry,in making notation based tunes.
One more intersting point about this film was that there were 3 Agha s in this film.One was actor Agha Jan,the other was cinematographer Agha Hasham and the third was Agha jani Kasmiri who wrote the story,s/play and dialogues of the film.
Mohan is an honest to the core young man,in love with a girl.The girl ditches him by marrying some rich man.Mohan is frustrated and he becomes a Gunda,joins a gang of a Boss-whom no one has seen-and also changes his name to Bankelal.(Sunil Dutt).
One day this Banke saves a child Munna (Daisy Irani) from drowning and they become close friends as Munna has no father.Munna’s mother Laxmi(Shyama) does not approve this and warns munna to keep away from Banke,as he is a Gunda.
Munna falls ill and Banke visits him,promising him to reform and become a good man.He goes and surrenders to the police,but Police want him to help them capture the Boss.
The Boss is already looking for Banke as he does not want to lose him.He kidnaps Munna to blackmail Banke to return to his fold.There is a fight and when Banke is about to kill Boss(B.M.Vyas),Laxmi reveals that Boss is Munna’s father.Boss runs away.but is killed by the Police.
Banke marries Laxmi and they live happily with Munna.

Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

There is a movement going on in Mumbai to free all animals from any hardships including horses. But surprising nobody is talking about bullocks and donkeys who have been the beast of burden for generations. Recently a horse died at Fort enroute to Nariman Point (for joy-ride for children) as the rider jumped the signal and was hit by the taxi. It died of internal injuries.
By the way the passenger bringing up the rare is Daisy/Honey Irani.
