‘Sannaata’ is a film from 1966 that has simply sublime music composed by Hemant Da. The film has only 4 songs, and all of them are absolute gems of melody.
The film is produced under the banner of GC Films, Bombay and is directed by Mohinder Sabharwaal. The star cast includes Tanuja, Anil Chatterjee, Veena, Raj Mehra, David, Asit Sen, Poornima, Janakidas, Protima Devi, KN Singh, Ravikant, Bhola, Jugnu, Durga Singh, Vishnu Dutt etc. This is one of the earliest films for Gulzar as a song writer, in fact his sixth film of the career, as per the available filmography. All the songs in this film are rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. One of the songs is a twin song, and its male version is sung by Hemant Da himself. Given the list of actos my guess is that this song is picturized on Tanuja. I would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information for this film and the song.
One of the earliest songs by Gulzar, listening to the words is like a whiff of fresh, pleasant breeze. Gulzar has a way of expressing very deep and complex emotions in words that are very simple, and quick to catch your fancy. he words are just adorable. No matter how much one contemplates, there still are distant expressions, interpretations, luring from the horizon. The poet is talking about “khaamosh waadon ki awaaz mein” – the sound of silent promises. Such a beautiful expression. The songs of this film create such a wonderful haunting experience in the mind, and the combination of words, the melody and the rendering by Lata ji, all is just superlative.
Let the words by Gulzar play in the mind – and just savor the lovely feeling of expectation, so wonderfully expressed
aisa hota to nahin
aisaa ho jaaye agar. . .
And the simple melody by Hemant Da. Enjoy.
aisa hota to nahin, aisa ho jaaye agar
tumhin mil jaao
Naa, such things don’t happen
Oh, but what of it
If they do
That we could meet
And that you could be mine
vaada nahin koi, koi kasam nahin
magar intezaar hai, hamne intezaar
No assurances are pledged
No vows are promised
And yet, there is a hope
An expectation
And I do wait
awaaz detey hain, anjaan aankhon par
hamen aitbaar hai, hamen aitbaar. . .
Sometimes
I can hear a beckoning call
Coming from (silent) eyes
Eyes that are unknown strangers
And yet, I have faith
I believe
And I do trust
bechain ho kar jab, koi akelaa sa
chiraagon ki mehfil, jalaaye bujhaaye
With an eager anxiety
In loneliness
One is simply lighting and dousing
The gathering of lamps
khaamosh waadon ki awaaz mein koi
bulaaye tumhin ko, tumhin ko bulaaye
The silent, unstated promises
Come to life
In unexpressed sounds
And the heart calls out for you
It calls, only for you

Whether this Anil Chatterjee is the same Anil chatterjee who appeared in Doordarshan T.V.Serial “Naqab”(in a role of ageing hero)(shown on Doordarshan in its heydays, when there are no other channel)????
I think the same anil chatterjee appeared in Amol Palekar`s Ankahee(1985-as father of docile Deepti Naval-This movie is a very good movie)
Haan yaad aayaa, he was there in 1965 movie Faraar producer and music director of the movie-Hemant Kumar.
One very good Hemant da song was picturised on him regarding sharaab-“log peete hain, ladkhadaathe hain”

Yes Atul~ji, that fantastic tandem number is ‘Bas ek chhup si lagi hai…’ by Hemant-da and Lata. The Lata’s version is picturised on Tanuja. Anil Chatterjee made a suave, debonair hero in ‘Sannata’………
