Throughout the world, there have been tragic love stories that are simply known by the name of the lovers- viz Romeo Juliet, Laila Majnu etc. In Punjab, there have been not one or two, four four such love stories. Using the word “Chaand” in the lyrics, if done carefully, has the effect of making the song a nice romantic song. and if the title of the movie itself is “Chaand”, and the song is picturised on a “chaandni raat” (full moon light), then the effect is incredible and it leads to the kind of songs that I describe as a “Chaayaageet” songs.

When I was a young kid, I was into new songs (which meant songs of 1970s) and I disliked listening to old songs. I wondered why the older singers could not sing songs like the newer songs, and why the music of these two songs were not jazzy like the new songs.

I am aware of a movie called “Chaand” (1959), but I have found that another movie of a same name was released in 1944 too. This earlier movie, viz “Chaand” (1944) had Sitara,Prem Adeeb,Sapru,Bega Para etc in it.

“Balam” (1949) is a movie starring Wasti,Suraiyya,Jayant,Masud,Nigar Sultana,Agha etc and several of these names do not ring any bells for most music lovers, that is how old this movie is.

“Sanam” (1951) had Suraiyya, Dev Anand, Meena Kumari, K N Singh, Gope, Pratima Devi, Jillo etc in it. In addition to being a box office hit, this movie was a musical blockbuster. I have already discussed five songs from this movie.
