Sun mere saajnaa re

When I was a young kid, I was into new songs (which meant songs of 1970s) and I disliked listening to old songs. I wondered why the older singers could not sing songs like the newer songs, and why the music of these two songs were not jazzy like the new songs.
Now, some four decades later, I find myself discussing more songs of 1950s than that of 1970s ! My taste in Hindi movie songs has undergone quite some change during this period. Maybe I have got matured. 😉
One of the “boring” old songs that I recall listening to on radio quite frequently those days was this duet “Sun mere saajaan ho”. I could identify the voice of Rafi and Lata in this song, but apart from that I had no idea about its details, nor was I interested.
Now, when I rediscovered this song recently, it was like meeting an old aquaintance that I did not much care for in the past but who now I know better. when i listened to this song this time, I was suitably impressed. I could now appreciate this song better and realise that this song must have been hugely popular when it was released in 1953.
The song is simply superb to listen to. Lata and Rafi, then in the earlier days of their careers, enhance their reputations in this song. Qamar Jalalabadi has come up with simple sounding, yet effective lyrics. And Husnlal Bhagatram’s music touches the heart strings of the listeners.
This song is indeed a gem from the golden era of Hindi movie music.
Song-Sun mere saajnaa re (Aansoo) (1953) Singers-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
saajnaa aa aa ho
saajnaa aa aa ho
saanwri ho ho ho
sun mere saajnaa re,
sun mere saajnaa
dekho ji mujhko bhool na jaanaa
sun mere saajnaa re ho
sun meri saanwri o,
sun meri saanwri
apnaa banaake chhod na jaanaa
sun meri saanwri ho ho
na tujhko main bhulaaungaa,
nigaahon mein chhupaaungaa
na tujhko main bhulaaungaa,
nigaahon mein chhupaaungaa
magar itnaa karo waadaa
magar itnaa karo waadaa
ki rishtaa tod na jaanaa
sun meri saanwri hoy
sun meri saanwri o,
sun meri saanwri
apnaa banaake chhod na jaanaa
sun meri saanwri ho ho
ye rishtaa chaar aankhon kaa
mere saajan na tootegaa
ye rishtaa chaar aankhon kaa
mere saajan na tootegaa
jo mujhko aazmaanaa ho
jo mujhko aazmaanaa ho
to doli leke aa jaanaa
sun mere saajnaa re
sun mere saajnaa re
sun mere saajnaa
dekhoji mujhko bhool na jaanaa
sun mere saajnaa o
sun meri saanwri o,
sun meri saanwri
apnaa banaake chhod na jaanaa
sun meri saanwri ho ho
baje jis roz shehnaayi
baje jis roz shehnaayi
samajh lenaa baaraat aayi
o armaanon ki doli mein
o armaanon ki doli mein
dulhaniya ban ke aa jaanaa
sun meri saanwri oye
sun meri saanwri o
sun meri saanwri
apnaa banaake chhod na jaanaa
sun meri saanwri ho ho
agar qismat badal jaaye,
agar qismat badal jaaye,
judaayi hamko tadpaaye
qasam hai pyaar ki tujhko
qasam hai pyaar ki tujhko
qasam hai pyaar ki tujhko
tu mujhse rooth na jaanaa
sun mere saajnaa re
sun mere saajnaa re
sun mere saajnaa
dekhoji mujhko bhool na jaanaa
sun mere saajnaa re o

Wonderful duet ! I heard it today for the first time , even then the song was so familiar that the tune was very much hummable after the first few lines. For melody and sweetness, it will go in the top Lata-Rafi duets, top 50 or so.
Thanx.

Had not heard before but discovered few years ago. When I listened for the first time could not register, but on the second attempt, I literally cried. Don’t know why, but maybe because it is very touching. Lyrics of Qamar Jalalabadi and Music by Husnlal Bhagatram are superb! Excellent song indeed.

Oh, I absolutely love this song. Hearing it after a long time.
You are right, Atul, it used to play on radio a lot. And it is one of the songs I liked even in those days. I think in those days, I did not have a problem with duets. It was the slow Lata solos that used to get to me (I like them now though 🙂 ).
This one is a real gem. Can listen to it any number of times.
