I am aware of the movie “Laila Majnu” (1976) but I was not aware that a movie called “Daastaan e Laila Majnu” was released two years prior to that. This movie, viz. “Daastaan e Laila Majnu” (1974) was obviously a B grade movie.It was produced and directed by R L Desai. Starcast of the movie included names like Kanwaljeet, Anamika, B. M. Vyas, Dulari, Jayshree T., S. N. Tripathi, K. N. Singh, etc.

During late 1950s, Shashdhar Mukherji and Agha Kashmiri were discussing the next movie of Fimalaya in the formers residence. Shashdhar Mukherji wanted to sign up Shammi Kapoor, but Agha Hashra Kashmiri pointed at the youngster arriving at the home and told Shashdhar Mukherji-“Here is the hero of your movie”. That younster of none other than Joy Mukherji, Shashdhar Mukherji’s son. Shashdhar Mukherji was skeptical but he entrusted the job of grooming Joy Mukherji as a hero on Kashmiri. The movie called “Love in Shimla” (1960) was shot and the movie succeeded at the box office.

“Bindiya” (1960) was an AVM Productions movie. It was directed by Krishnan Panju. THe starcast included names like Padmini, Balraj Sahni, Jagdeep, Lalita Pawaar, David, Om Prakash, Rajendranath, Jayashree Gadhkar, Achala Sachdev, Minoo Mumtaaz, Neelam, Hanumanthachari, L.R.Mudaliaar, Siddhu etc.

“Qawwali Ki Raat” (1964) is a Durgesh Productions movie. It was directed by Durgesh Kumar and Santosh. This movie, which was clearly inspired from “Barsaat Ki Raat” has some lovely songs in it, which are great to listen to, even though the movie itself was a B grade movie with only small time actors in it, viz. Aruna Irani, Kamaljeet, Kumkum, Mumtaz, Deven Verma, Mohan Choti, Jagdeep, Murad etc in it.

“Oomar Qaid” (1961) is a movie produced by Super pictures and directed by Aspi Irani. This B grade movie had actors like Sheikh Mukhtar, Sudhir, Nazima, Helen, Mukri, Hiralal, Sulochana, Mohan Choti, Jeevankala etc in it.

“Cha Cha Cha” (1964) is Bhavdeep Films production. It was produced and Directed by Chandrashekhar. He was also the hero of this movie. He had signed up Helen to play the heroine opposite him. So this movie was one of the rare occasions when Helen was not a one song wonder but got to sing lots of songs and got to act in a Bhartiya Naari kind of role.
